Threw it in the garbage after I played this thing.

I have the Deluxe HSS and paid 120 for it. I have been quite happy with it but after playing my American Pro for a few weeks, it feels like a gardening tool.
Of course as they say "comparison is the thief of joy", and these Indios are a phenomenal find for new hobbyist on a budget.
I grabbed one for my son to start learning on. Can you advise me what a "proper setup" would be? Does that mean take it to a local music store and have them do something to it? What would something like that cost? Also, what strings would you advise? Thanks
Good deal price.
Should I get this guitar, a CUBE BABY, and the Monoprice 15w tube amp? Or a Fender Custom Shop Strat, some boutique handwired pedals, and a Blues Jr.?
And I recommend watching some well picked videos about TRAIN simple setup. And do it for a little kid or let them learn. Or call local music stores and ask price for a fine TRAIN detailed setup. But if you learn yourself then after that it will be time saved too. And maintaining it later quicker.
Remember larger strings are a bit of a myth and can stress the guitars multiple fine setup balances. Go with 9's unless its short scale then about 10's max. down to 8's on shorter scale lenghtd for special preference.
One thing: People are stupid for thinking a shipped guitar at ANY price point will be either perfect or in pieces. They typically leave a little room for your choice like action height. With the $60 guitars closer to full tweak than $500+ guitars, ironically. But you never know UNLESS pro setup is stated as part of the total price. Like Monoprice DLX (Heavy upgrades though) models when on sale around $110.
But you will see over and over again folks claiming all shipped guitars better be perfect, and saying you get what you pay for. Not always. Plus that all around $60 have to be trash.
Remember posters are not authenticated here. Not that we should be; as long as you know if you can't test their details then do not go by them.

Except where you inferred that is all they're good for; because that makes them more then you can do with any other guitar, I would have agreed with you.
But then you said garden tool which is a fine opinion but terrible report. it is useless because you didn't say why it would be a garden tool, at all.
Again the deluxe models which has been as low as $110, upgrades similar to high priced fenders plus stated pro setup. Their only issue is that classic wood is on the heavy side and that's not better but you're welcome to prefer it.
The real dysphoria here is the thinking that you have to agree to prejudice just because of price. At Slick deal the prices should seem unbelievable.
To the extent it becomes a high-priced, low value contest then is the lack of free enterprise competition.
I have sampled many very high priced guitars and could buy them. They are practically the same, within design types. And most popular design types (your fit, feel And preference) are actually less expensive.
So I am happy more people and new beginners can actually get in as little as $58. Basically everyone who will can learn. You really do not get much by going up the manufactured price tiers. And mine are eBay specials with no handicaps. They play along side anything and actually with several advantages..
TLDR: It's all in your head. Job #1 is learn all the myths spread about like a cancer. Only then can you learn what makes real differences that matter. And then pick what you test first. Do not be testing with the buy button. Get them in your hands and practice first if you are new.
If you can't imagine removing any price and comparing as if they all cost the same then you will fail. And probably post bad advice.
