This is a $2000 home theater projector. Most people aren't tossing this in the backyard for movie nights.

It's certainly more flexible than a equivalent TV - but it's a shrinking market.
Actually, projector sales and growth is on the rise. Projectors like this were always a somewhat niche class. Most people aren't sticking these in their living rooms. But now with the uptick in UST projectors, the market has seen a boom.

While larger real estate TV's are becoming more and more affordable, which also helps that market, the projector market is not shrinking. It's growing.

Although it comes down to individual choice, I will say this. All of my friends who've tried a projector, never wants to go back to a TV, ALL! This is regardless of how much more perfect the image on a TV could get. I am in the same boat, the experience of big screen offered by projectors is unmatched by anything else available yet in TV form(OLED included). For anything and everything I use my projector. The TV just sits there, pretty much unused to the point that we moved it to our garage, none of the family members are now interested in it anymore. I totally get it when one goes for a TV due to room constraints, but otherwise it's a lifetime "NO" for me and those I know. Not saying for argument's sake, but for me immersive experience offered by projector(even a quality 1080P model) on a 120/150 inch (even if it's just a wall)trumps PQ offered by OLED TV
This. I'm fortunate to have a HT in my basement. But I also have a "sports room" with 5 TV's (like a sports bar) where I can watch college football on Saturday's. I have a nice setup in that room with the main screen being an OLED. Nice Surround sound as well. But I almost rarely watch a movie or a TV show in that room that isn't sports. The main appeal to that room is the 5 displays for sports, and the windows where I can see sunlight Smilie

But having the screensize/space I do in my basement (I have an EPSON 6050UB), the picture quality is still excellent, and the massive real estate I have for it...I just don't want to watch a movie on a small screen.

But to each their own.

Thats where individual user experience and compromise come in. Picture quality from my 135" projector definitely cant compared to my dad's 65" OLED. But I value immersion that much more. Until some manufacture can produce a 120" oled for less than $10k, I will drop my projector without a heart beat, until then, I will stick with projector for now. I will compromise on color/quality/convenient for big screen. Just like you compromise on screen size for everything else. Your priority is not the same for everyone.

Having seen oled, i do understand why you prefer oled over projector. However, sitting 6' from a TV to get the same view as a projector is just weird. I tried that and it just doesnt work. The feeling is not the same. There is no space, cant stretch or lying fown with 6 feet from the TV, it also messes with furnitures arrangement.
It's your mind playing tricks on you. You will always see the bigger projector screen as a better experience because you have already convinced yourself otherwise instead of giving yourself a chance to train it to know the immersive experience is the same. You are not the first and you won't be the last so you do you.

As for me, I have a big OLED at the foot of my bed and I much prefer watching a movie there than in my big home theater screen. Comfortable, immersive, and most importantly picture quality that can't be rivaled with any projector.

As an analogy to the mind tricks, if you take 2 TV's with the exact screen size but one has a big thick bezel while the other has a thin bezel, and you showed it to a person who doesn't know the screen size, most people will tell you the thick bezel TV is a bigger TV despite having the same screen size (yes, i know, this despite most people hating thick bezels for cosmetic reasons). Just ask the people who transitioned from their thick bezel plasma to thin bezel LED. It's just a mind trick that over time people were able to overcome.

I'm not talking about the viewing area vs. distance, I believe in math and science so i do believe we will get the same field of view if you are adjusting the distance. However, it is physically impractical to place a 3 feet wide sofa at 3-4 feet away from a TV inside a 17ft x 25ft family room. There will be literally 3 feet between the tv and the sofa. Where can you put a table in between? Your viewing area will take up an awkward 1/4 or 1/3 chunk of space in the family room. How would you arrange the rest of furniture around it? Furthermore, with only 7 feet from the TV, it can only accommodate at most 2 viewers. You cant definitely use that kind of setup with a family of 3+ or guests gathering.

You said it yourself, you place the tv at the edge of the bed, I dont think a group of family with 4+members/friends want to watch a movie or night game from your bed just to view better picture quality. If you look at most house arrangement, they have their sofa place around 2/3 of the room or around 10 feet away from the wall/TV. It is the most pleasing arrangement for most homes.

What about speakers arrangement? How can we arrange an atmos setup with 11 speakers plus a massive subwoofer within 6-10 feet of a TV. Those towers surround speakers are absolute eyesore when placing in the middle of the room to accommodate surround arrangement. Also the overhead atmos speakers, it would totally destroy the purpose when placing them directly on top of the front 3 speakers. As you can see, this is what I mean by physically impractical in a real house with a family.

I have a TV in most bedroom rooms of my house; but a projector has its place, a very good compromise from a TV screen for its massive immersion experience in a large room for a large group of people. You cant have a family of 4 having the same immersive viewing with an 80" TV. TV can win in all categories of color/quality/day time viewing, buy it cant deny the benefit a large screen can offer, the flexibility and comfort. Until manufactures can make an affordable 120" TV, projectors are here to stay.

What's the state of these "4K" projectors? Are they actually displaying 3840 x 2160 pixels, or using some sort of uprezing/supersampling to achieve 4K?
They aren't, it should be illegal for them to be branded 4k. There are up close comparison shots on AVS forum. From what I remember even a 2 pixel on/off grid will blur into nothing, 1 pixel just turns black.

The 5050ub and the ht5550 both are supposed to be quite better than tk860i. A good set of videos comparing the former 2.

If you are into gaming, 5050 will be better due to low input lag
