You know when you go to menards and go through the pile of 2x4s and toss the warped one to the side? These are the ones you toss to the side.
They take the 2x4s that no one wants, repile them up and put a sale sign on them.

I fell for this once... just once.

Hooooo. Tough guy!

Also, reminder to support and find out if you have a local lumber mill around you.

The one in my city sells wood to the public for 1/4 the price of big box home repair stores.

remember when 2x4s were $8+, now if only plywood prices came back to reality

We need more mernads stores all over the world.
As a company, they are terrible. Many employment violations, EPA violations, very poor place to work. They are usually the cheapest though and I've spent a lot of time and money at Menards.

Agreed! I bought a sheet of 3/4" 4x8 maple plywood off the shelf for $50 in late 2019, and that exact same piece is STILL $90 right now.

I think the person who mentioned that lumber quality might be regional is probably correct. My local Menards has much better lumber and more selection than my local Lowe's (no HD near me), but where my brother lives, HD is king for lumber.

Only thing I hate about Menard's is their loss prevention team, it's like trying to cross the border, while your car is being searched.

my lowes and home depot has 3/4 white wood for $65 for a 4x8. not the worse but definitely still $20 too much. i don't know why people say the local lumber yards are cheaper. it's twice the price there + the drive.

Menards generally has the best lumber so there's nothing wrong with this. I'm usually in between all of them as far as travel time.

You should pay attention to the price checking out, the sticker of my 1x3s were on the other end and instead of sweeping 8ft my cashier went to her book. When I corrected her on the price she said maybe I misunderstood the whole rebate thing(which I'm sure she has to deal with all day long). I just let it go cause. Whatever. Couple miles down the road I realized she charged me the 1x4 vs the 1x3. Makes sense most common behavior board.

Honest mistake I'm sure/i should have caught it anyway

Menards lumber sucks. You'll spend 30 mins trying to find 10 boards that aren't trash
It really depends on the brand of lumber they have. As a builder I will ask for them to grab certain brands that are better and have had much more success in finding straight lumber. The bigger concern should be the type of lumber. Their fur 2 X 4's are always covered in mold.

I have never seen a moldy board in store. Like most other thing, guessing ymmv.

I just bought some today to finish framing a closet and was blown away when the entire pallet of 2x4s were perfect. I mean zero warp. Flat and true. Too bad I already finished framing the other rooms last week when the lumber was all knots and twisted... and not on sale...

For best boards and to avoid the "picked through" stuff you'll want to go out to their lumber barn. That cycles through quickly and always has the best selection.

For anyone without a very precise eagle eye to find the best studs, you can look for the stamped grade. #1 and Sel Str (structural) are usually going to have less warping and cupping. Also, avoid any heart center. Those will cup, warp, and split 1000% guaranteed.

Order Menards lumber pick up if you're looking for an aneurysm. Soviet Russia probably had better system than Menards lumber pick up process.
