tl;dr (I'm an owner of a z690i aorus)

z690i launches
pci-e gen 4 not working (causing crashing after installing gpu drivers), forces users to use pci-e gen 3 for the time being
several months of attempted bios fixes, none work
Gigabyte give in, conceed that it is a hardware defect, owners are allowed to return z690i aorus ultra boards for z690i aorus ultra plus (actually a few upgrades, namely wifi6 > wifi 6e) but the announcement was fairly silent (basically the only people who knew were the people who knew what the problem was and was following the story)
old ultraboards are rebranded as ultra lite, advertises that its gen 3 speeds only and sold for ~80$ less

There are much better options for a server. This is designed for overclocking, whereas servers tend to benefit much more from efficiency and stability.

If you really want an overclocked server for some reason, there are m.2 cards that offer lots of SATA ports that you could install

Is this a good deal? I need more than 2 sata ports that this has. Would a pcie card be useful ? For a server.

Depends on what you want the server to do. If just drives, then you can get a pcie sata card, anywhere from 2-24 ports. But this motherboard is probably overkill for a basic server.

Look into an HBA card. I picked up a 9300 i8 for like $50 and that adds the ability to have 8 more SATA connectors.

Been a few weeks now since Christmas. With the saga Gigabyte made for the Z690I I hope they fixed things this time around. Specs does look amazing though. Watch out those thick VRM/M.2 covers, the screw down point is closer to the rare I/O meaning in some low cooler heigh cases (Meshlicious in 4-lot mode, A4-H2O and many other sandwich style cases), once it's installed you probably can't reach to unscrew it to add/replace M.2 drives.

Alternatively, Asus ROG Z690-I is $185, but that board has its own issue as well, namely piss poor cooler compatibility (probably why you ever will see a ROG board this cheap) and lately Asus support has been a joke.

For servers, you want a motherboard that supports ECC Ram. I'm 98% sure this doesn't support ECC because usually you have to get a motherboard dedicated for server or workstation use that supports ECC Ram.

I know ECC is important but I've never had that in the past. I ultimately decided to get the ASRock lightning z790. Has 6 satas and supports my 48gb memory modules

The built in ECC of DDR5 may suffice. This was one of the improvements over DDR4. Still not as good as dedicated ECC module, but I'd say for most home server use cases it is more than sufficient.
