This is Inte's latest CPU architecture for Mobile platform where they have been struggling with high power consumption and poor battery life and a big change in SOC die design over Intel's 12th and 13th Gen. On top of that, they finally updated the Integrated Graphics form Xe archircture to Intel Arc, same archiecture used in their dedicated Graphics cards, resulting a huge performing boost, matching AMD's RDNA 3 based Integrated graphics. This design does not bring pure performance increase over past generation but focuses on performance/Watt and now replacing the 12th and 13th Gen P series (28W base TDP) and H45 (45W base TDP) processors.

this processor and igpu combination is almost the exact equivalent of the AMD 7840HS+780m cpu/igpu combination. Considering you can get similar laptops with this same OLED screen, size factor and but better specs from HP with the 7840hs but for $150 cheaper, it seems like that is the way to go. The HP version from costco has a brighter, higher refresh rate OLED screen and 1tb SSD for $700 https://slickdeals.net/f/17212297-costco-members-hp-pavilion-plus-14-oled-laptop-ryzen-7-7840u-16gb-ram-1tb-ssd-699-99 but you lose thunderbolt, which could be a dealbreaker for some

the zenbook 14x is also in the same category for cheaper https://slickdeals.net/f/17228749-asus-zenbook-14x-14-5-2-8k-oled-touch-laptop-intel-evo-platform-i7-13700h-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-inkwell-gray-699-99?src=category_page
More powerful CPU, less powerful GPU, worse battery life (i presume)

Your analysis is mostly correct in this regard. However, one of the main disadvantages of the Pavilion Plus 14 series with 7840U is that it does not support USB4. So, if you are using TB4 or USB4 doks, cconnecting multiple high speed peripherals or connecting to multiple displays or planning to use external GPU dock, that may be a big iuuse. HP only provides USB4/TB4 in their Business and Workstation based Ryzen based produts like EliteBook and Firefly series.

ZenBook 14X is OLED is a really nice product with good performance with 13700H in CPu department. However, this Core Ultra 7 or Ultra 5 may be performing the same in this case even in CPU department beause unlike full sized laptops, in this small Thin & Light design, the CPU cannot pull that much power. If you see the review then you'll see that in a gaming laptop, i7-13700H an pull over 100W during CPU only load whereas in Zenbook 14X, it is limited to around 70W for avery small time. Since Core Ultra series is very efficient, in that power envelop, it might actually perform better.
UltraBook review site recently reviiewed the 2024 Zenbook 14 with the model you referred here and found out that tthe Meteor Lake was beating it out in PU department as well.

The new Intel CPUs have not been properly tested and the only one comparable to a RYZEN 7 example would be the intel 7

so please, do not spread misinformation around

Interesting, and helpful comments, so thanks OP and commenters.
I'm getting older though and need a 15"-16" screen, if not 17", although this looks nice otherwise

My must-haves are a nice screen with resolution greater than FHD, good battery life (been looking at slim & light models geared towards portability), and a full keyboard with number pad (gotta have it for work or I'd lose my mind). Beyond that I'm flexible, don't need discrete graphics because I rarely play PC games anymore.

Anyone have a good suggestion? Looking for a deal obviously, this being SD. The 16" OLED Acer Swift Edge at Costco for $699 would have worked but it doesn't have the number pad. So many good 14" deals, what about those of us getting into grandparent age?

I'm flexible. $1000 or so, preferably $800 or less. If give up and decide to spend much over $1000 I'll just get a 16" Macbook Pro but I'd rather stick with a PC.

About $100 over your targeted budget, but you also get Year 2 warranty through Costco Concierge, 1% or 2% back from Costco, and 90 day return so you have time to properly check out the laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had been looking at a few that Costco had but hadn't seen that one for that price. I would prefer to buy from Costco, all else being equal, because of the added warranty and easy returns, which are both a big deal. And LG Grams are what I've been drooling over when shopping, so I like where your head's at.

I've been hoping to find a stellar deal on something nice marked down to $700-$800, but the price isn't really that big of a deal for me, as long as I get something that will meet my needs and last a while. So I should probably just go ahead and pull the trigger. I love OLED screens but that IPS screen on that Gram should realistically be good enough, and that model checks all the boxes for me.
