I have owned this for a few years and it is great if you understand a few things:

1. This is based on the traditional Japanese bento meal of hot soup, rice, main dish (room temp), salad.

2. Just remember hot on the bottom, cold on top.

3. The large container is vacuum insulated so keeps items at their normal temperature for 6 hours.

4. Hot soup (vented lid) goes on the bottom as seen in the video, not like the picture.

5. Salad goes on the top and is completely insulated from the soup.

6. The plastic bases are microwaveable, not the lids. But with Japanese bento you don't need to heat anything... for other styles you can do it without the lids.

7. It says not to put in the dishwasher, but you can if you don't use high heat setting. Otherwise, just soak all the bowls in a plastic tub with soap for a minute, then wash and dry on a rack. Takes just two minutes.

8. The bag is a bit fiddly, so I rarely use it. You only need it if you want to carry with a strap.
I have a few of these and love them. The overall design is great and does exactly what it says. Biggest potential cons is all of the containers are plastic and some of the seals can be difficult to clean a bit.
The ideal way to use it (per Zojirushi's instructions), is to heat up food separately, fill containers for hot items with hot water while food is warning, then dump out the water and transfer food into the containers. This will pre-warm the containers and they will keep your food warm enough for a solid 6-7 hours if packaged properly.

I wash the same way, does that mean Im Asian? Agreed, it's a lot of work. Maybe I'm honorary Asian, I agree with everytime you say!

I worry about food spoiling at that warm temperature, and anything hotter I worry about the plastic leaching … I think I'll pass for now.
I assume the target audience does not have the luxury of refrigeration or heating methods, thus the need to maintain food at a 'warm' temperature.

And while not ideal I think we can all agree our parents / grandparents survived eating room temp food out of such containers for most of their adult lives. I know I spent years taking leftovers to school with the world's smallest ice pack in a 1mm thick Ninja Turtles lunch box with a BPA insulated mug. Again, not ideal but neither is eating food (regularly) with so many preservatives it doesn't need refrigeration. Wink

Also, can I even use a dishwasher with this plastic containers?
I have had this one for a couple of years, and I started running the bowls and lids (not the jar) through the dishwasher. I have one of the models with a third rack for silverware on top, and I use that for the lids. I haven't had any problems, but the dishwasher is pretty efficient, so it may not get super hot during the drying cycle.

BPA free does not mean you can warm those plastic containers in the microwave. It's not a good idea.
Aside for cold storage (like coleslaw, fruits, etc) which we still use plastic for, we switched over to glass containers for everything warm or to be reheated.

Avoid plastic for food. We have move to pure steel or glass.

I haven't seen one but I haven't looked. Just above your comment someone posted a metal container version. Just note it won't insulate as well as the Zojirushi as it doesn't have the all encompassing thermos container. Alternatively you could look into a soup and separate food thermos. Won't be as compact.

This is the dumbest product, who takes that many cups for lunch and who cleans them every day? I have a rice cooker from this company paid $238, and makes rice no different than $10 wall mart rice cooker. I dont trust this company products any more.

Are you just using the quick cook setting? If so, there really is no difference.

I was hoping that Steel containers of similar sizes that could replace/ substitute inside ones in the Zojirushi Container. Best of both?
