First, use PC Part Picker to see what's on sale brand new. In the $300–400 range, you could score an RX 6800 right now (https://www.newegg.com/xfx-radeon...6814150886) or wait for an RX 6800 XT on sale. I wouldn't settle for anything older than last gen or with less than 12GB of VRAM: https://pcpartpicker.com/products...548&page=1

You can try Micro Center open-box GPUs, if you have one nearby (https://www.microcenter.com/searc...=pricehigh). Sometimes, they have decent discounts. And they don't mark them as open-box but rather as on sale on the invoice, so easy to register for warranty. (Some, but not all, brands give you trouble with the warranty coverage if you buy an open-box GPU.)

Also, Amazon Warehouse (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-War...0158976011) open-box GPUs can have significant discounts—look for sold and shipped by Amazon only. But a lot of theirs are PowerColor, which has terrible warranty coverage (only 90 days) for open-box items. But always check the new price for these, as Amazon Warehouse prices don't move concurrently with the market. Deal Forager is a decent, yet not always up-to-date, tool to search for Amazon Warehouse deals: https://dealforager.com/deals?cat...0xt&sort=3

Either way, prices should go down by February 1, after Nvidia and AMD's January GPU releases. Good luck!

Edit: Amazon has just added a $20-off coupon, matching Newegg's price.
*If you have the Prime credit card, you get 5% cash back.

Old comment: Amazon seems to be matching Newegg's prices before the additional promo codes. So, Newegg ends up being cheaper.

And, before anyone chimes in about Newegg being all evil, Amazon is no saint. And Newegg has stepped up its returns policy and customer service since the last exposé by Gamers Nexus etc.

Please, please, please do not trust userbenchmark.com. It is not reliable at all, and it has a very creepy anti-AMD bias. You can read reports all over the internet about it, including from reliable tech media outlets.

I literally told you 2 of several places to check, but I'll go ahead and link you to Reddit for you.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Newegg/
I had done a Google search and hadn't seen a flurry of issues. I checked the subreddit, and there's nothing big there in recent posts. I'll admit that I didn't doom scroll through the whole thing to find horror stories. If you know of any, please share. But nothing looks out of the ordinary in recent posts.

Either way, I'm not defending Newegg. Just saying that, since their recent returns scandal, about a year ago, they've gotten much, much better due to the backlash they received then.

The 3080 for $460 is a better deal than the 7900 XT for $710, imo.

In gaming benchmarks, the 7900 XT is not "$250 faster" than the 3080 imo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4NNK61fAjM
It's only 31% faster (source: techpowerup) so frames per dollar this is true, but VRAM is a concern so it depends on what you're playing. Hogwart's and RE4 for example are known to have issues with only 10GB VRAM, and games have been trending toward large VRAM use so the 7900 XT would be much much more future proof. Might be worth it if you don't want to worry about it or don't want to upgrade soon.

The CPU is a lot less important than most people think. Any reasonable CPU from the last 5 years is more than enough, unless using the absolute fastest graphics cards.

No, the 6800 XT GPU is too weak even with 16GB and often can't beat the 3080 10GB even at 4K!

3080 is 30% to 40% faster in most games such as Dying Light 2, Plague Tale: Requiem, it's even 23% faster at 4K in Total War: Warhammer III, faster in CyberPunk in 1440p and 4K too.

With Ray Tracing enabled, the gains are more like 50%+.

This is without even mentioning all the bugs and problems AMD GPU's experience when compared to Nvidia GPU's. I've always been a big supporter of AMD, but they need to get their act together imo.
Fair enough. I was using TechPowerUp, which has the 3080 as only 4% faster: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-s...0-xt.c3694

At 4k, on average, the RX 6800 XT is 6% slower without RT and 8% including RT. Here's a comparison from 9 months ago: https://youtu.be/rtt60ONpm44?si=s...0NXy&t=690

In the end, it depends on what type of gaming you do, which games you like to play, what features you use, and what upgrade cycle you plan on (i.e., 1-2 vs 4-5+ years). I would also add that, where applicable, whether you get 150 or 170 FPS won't necessarily make a huge difference. Just keep in mind that the RX 6800 XT will age better because it has 60% more VRAM.

The depends on the game, whether or not you're using ray tracing or other bells and whistles, FSR, etc.

For example, Doom Eternal should hit 4k 144hz very easily on this card. But I wouldn't expect it on a lot of newer games, particularly if you're not using FSR and you want to use ray tracing (but if you car about ray tracing you should be going with Nvidia).

Just go youtube and search for something like "RE4 Remake 7900XT". There are tons of benchmarks video that show you the performance with various ray tracing and FSR settings.

This is how RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT compete in popular games:
1080p resolution:
RX 6800 XT is 19.5% faster than RTX 3080
1440p resolution:
RX 6800 XT is 14.8% faster than RTX 3080
4K resolution:
RX 6800 XT is 8.2% faster than RTX 3080

Some of the newer games are vram hogs. It can handle a 3080 just fine.
the 6800xt timespy score stock on average is 19457, this is more on par with the 3080ti (19716)
It's overclockable to 21k+ ..at 22k that's 3090ti scores

https://www.3dmark.com/spy/21219349

its a 3080ti competitor, not a 3080. And extra vram on top (I have some titles and vr titles that use hog up vram like nothing, although 12gb sounds adequate for now)

I guess it comes down to specific games, resolutions and settings.

I'll just get whatever is cheapest and performs best for the games I play.

a 6800xt is faster than a 3080. Not by much, but it's a 3080ti competitor, not a 3080. It's quicker in unreal 5, has higher stock timespy scores across the board.
but a 3080 isn't bad by any means if the price is right

I got a 1070 Ti from Microcenter, open box for $110.
Best budget deal I've seen for the price.
I'd have to agree with others that the 6500 xt is crap.
It's not worth more than $65 imo.

My 1070 Ti for $110 is the gold standard deal at that price point.
It's much, MUCH faster than a lowly 6500 xt.

no the 6800xt is more powerful at rasterization..
https://benchmarks.ul.com/compare/best-gpus

7800xt is even a tad quicker and 499$ on Newegg with no coupons. Of course you have no dlss, but fsr isn't bad and supports every game. I'm just glad amd even exists or the prices would be high af without competition
