I recently bought 2 of these from my local Costco for the $199.99 price since I needed the shelving in my basement anyway. Got a price adjustment last week when I saw them in store for this price, so it was nice getting $40 back on each!

I have no experience with the Whalen ones mentioned above, but after putting these Edsal ones together, I don't think I would have any concerns about recommending them. They're Edsal brand, but on the box it actually has "Muscle Rack" branding too, so just FYI on that if that means anything to anyone. But yeah, they're super sturdy/solid and easy enough to put together once you get the hang of it.

In my case, the instructions didn't quite match the physical parts when it came to the smaller cross-bar support things. The instructions showed these angled tabs on the small cross-bar support pieces that were supposed to slot into slits on the main shelf bar. Instead, mine just had holes on each and then nuts/bolts to attach them together. Not a biggie, but it did trip me up a little bit at first.

Pro-tip on that note: be mindful of which way the threaded part of the bolt is pointed (up vs down). I put the bolts in willy-nilly at first, but then realized on one shelf that I had at a specific height to perfectly fit the 27 gallon black/yellow bins...if I had the threaded part pointing down (instead of the flat bolt head), the top of the bins caught on that threaded part of the bolt that pointed down from the shelf above, and therefore the bins wouldn't quite fit. Had to flip those bolts to point up & then the bins fit perfectly. Hope that makes sense.

Also on that note with the bins: with the width of the shelves, those 27 gallon black/yellow bins can fit 3 on a shelf, but not 4. So with 3 on a shelf, there is some room left over that isn't quite wide enough to fit a 4th bin (if I recall, there was like 10-11 inches left after 3 bins, but the bins are like 20 inches wide). Again, not a big deal as I can fit narrower bins or etc in there, but worth mentioning/knowing.

Lastly, make sure you measure your vehicle to make sure the box will fit, and have a friend or someone help you lift them...as the boxes are pretty large/unwieldly, and quite heavy. Not worth slipping a disc to try and macho-manhandle it by yourself, ha.

Anyway, just my 2 cents on these since I very recently bought and put them together. Without having a time machine to get these at pre-covid prices, I'd definitely recommend pulling the trigger on these at $160 if your local Costco has them & you're in the market/on the fence. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk; hope this helps someone!

On the Edsal website, this model is listed as weighing 130 lbs., compared to the 182 lbs of the Whalen that Costco sells, and people have mentioned that the beams are noticeably thinner.

https://edsal.zendesk.com/hc/en-u...duct-Sheet

I don't know if you can take two of these Edsal units, remove the bottom shelf from each and use it to connect the two units to form 18 feet of shelving along a wall, as you can do with the Whalen units. That ability really makes the Whalen racks a good deal compared to smaller racks.

So, if you are looking for a lighter weight box to carry from the store and set up, this would work.

A bit offtopic, but does anyone know of similar steel shelving that is only <48" tall and <36" wide? I need something smaller but still sturdy, like these types of shelves.
I have seen multiple brands that make smaller, 48" wide versions of these shelves (51-53 ish inches total)... But I don't think I've seen 36"

You might keep an eye on Amazon / eBay. I've been seeing more and more copycat versions of these shelves popping up there in different sizes.

Almost all of these designs seen basically identical, they just use different hole sizes & shapes probably for proprietary reasons.

I bought two of these Edsal shelves yesterday. Hoping to assembly them today to organize my basement.

You can link two sets together two provide three bays of shelving. Or link three sets together to get five bays, etc.. it's pictured on the box. I'll try to post a photo of the box later.

I own the Whalen rack, and it's incredibly sturdy. I considered the Esdal rack, inspected it at my nearby Costco, and found that while it's strong, it doesn't match the solid construction of the Whalen rack.
100% agree, I have three of the Whalen racks. I picked up one of these racks this weekend thinking it was the same brand; the Edsel one is nowhere near the quality. If I didn't already have it moved to my basement and unpacked I would return it and pay more for the Whalen one.
The Edsel on does the job, but not as easy to assemble and not nearly as heavy duty.

It looks the same as the Whalen one :

It's not. The Whalen one is heavier duty and easier to assemble. I know from experience; I have three Whalen ones linked together, the. Just bought the Edsel one thinking it was the same.

For those who have done the setup with two units linked and split into three bays, do you have a sense of how high the top shelves need to be for stability?

I think I read they were supposed to be in the top position (and set similar shelves up that way in garage). However, I am now installing a set in a basement with a ~6.5 foot ceiling, so would prefer to have usable space above the top shelf, if possible. They felt sturdy enough during assembly to comfortably lower the top shelf a foot or two, but I'd welcome others' input/experience.

I've attached a screenshot for the similar Whalen industrial rack that shows the two bottom shelves from the uniits repositioned into medium locations between the units. These are sturdy enough that there should be no problem with stability if you have all the shelves lower than the top level on each unit--especially if you keep racks placed in the lowest position to have support at the bottom.

That is, in the attachment, instead of having the two racks at the top on the left and right units, if they are now at the bottom, then the units should be sufficiently sturdy and supported.

YEP I bought 2 of the Whalen brand ones, and they are stout, meaning much thicker Gauge than the Husky ones I have…I also happened to walk back in when they were $80 each cheaper at $179 - you can put these together with one person, going back today to see if marked down even further, will grab another 2 if they are…we keep the boxes and cut the bottom and top to fit the shelves on top of the grate. (Great thing is costco will load your cart and load into your vehicle as well…,

I think I understand what you're saying and I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

I have 40' shipping containers that I use like sheds and I have these as shelves in there that go all the way down both sides of the shipping container with room to walk in the middle. So that's probably about 38' worth of connected shelving.

Both styles can be added onto indefinitely. They're like mini pallet racks. Once you get started, adding onto them is like building with Legos

2 uprights - one span of shelves
3 uprights - two spans of connected shelves
4 uprights - three spans of connected shelves

etc...

So if you bought 2 of these units, you'd have 4 uprights and could have up to three sections of connected shelving if you used fewer shelf beams per section. (I usually use 2 or 3 shelves per section. And they come with 4... so you can save the extra and put those towards your 3rd span of shelves

I have successfully mix and matched Edsal, Whalen, and Performax (from Menards) brands. These brands will work together if you find common hole heights.

I know the Performax uprights are a near perfect match for whichever Costco shelf uprights have the smaller, closer together holes. And they still work with the other kind with bigger holes when you find common hole heights. The Performax shelf beams and wood shelf decking also work with either the Whalen or the Edsal.

Yes it does. I have 4 sets of these Edsal racks, 2 in the basement and 2 in the garage, and use them exactly as you state. I took a shelf from each of the end units and used those shelves to bridge the 2 units together. I think 4 shelves is really too many for a single unit, depending on what you're storing. These are real overkill if you just intend to put bins on them.

I bought mine a couple years ago on moving into a new place - originally I was going to use wood, based on a design I'd used in a different house, but wood was priced so crazy back then these metal shelves were actually cheaper and much quicker to put together.

Bought one of the Edsal's with the Muscle Rack branding. My cross members don't have top holes as shown in the picture and the crossbeams seem just a TOUCH short where I can't get a screw in each bottom hole.

A friend is planning to convert these into 2 or 3 level bunk beds for a cheap hostel. I can't imagine sleeping on something that is only 24" wide but if you're cheap or desperate, it's probably fine for a few days.

Tell your friend to get an IKEA bunk bed for about $150. It'll be standard twin size so you can get a regular 38"x 72" mattress. Not sure how people would feel about sleeping in a 3 level bunk 24" wide.
