Same. TurboTax attempts to simplify the process by creating cartoonish situations that take forever to click through and before you know it, you're 5 pop-ups deep to get to an answer that should have been on the first window. HR Block is the way to go if you have limited patience. 😁

My hesitation with any of these online services is that they retain all of your info for 8 or more years, which means any future breaches will include absolutely everything needed for someone trying to steal your tax return, since normally the IRS will verify it's you by asking for info from a previous return.

It's a big target and I don't trust these companies to keep the data secure if they're storing it.

I have a few investment accounts like a CD, money market, two Roth and I have a regular 9 to 5 job.
You won't have a problem Smilie Just have to make sure you have all the forms from those accounts

Is it hard to do your own taxes or is it simply just data entry
If you just earn a paycheck and maybe some bank account interest, it's pretty straightforward and really no software is needed, or just use the free online options. If you make stock trades, have a mortgage, own a small business, have enough deductions to itemize, or a bunch of other things, it gets complicated really fast. Aside from walking you through those more complicated filing situations, the tax softwares are WAY more logically organized than the IRS form-filling steps. The interactional walk-through, and that it systematically takes you through all the possible areas that apply, is a big plus for the softwares. I did mine manually for years, and I'd never go back to that again. Have not made a mistake in 20 years of using the tax software.

If you wanted, you could find ways to reduce your AGI then to get just below the cut off. This was possible for us until we crossed the $250k threshold.

I only like these tax softwares (HR and TT) because they can connect to my brokerage accounts and pre-load all the forms. With many trades throughout the year, it will be a pain to enter these entries 1 at a time. In the end, I see it as a means of saving time. Everyone is different and some may value their time more than the others.

Well said. These free tax services are not one size fits all although some here would try and make you believe otherwise with their constant upsell and glowing reviews.

Sure, it's cheaper to snail mail it in BUT most states then say it can take 8 to 12 weeks to get your refund then instead of 1 to 2 weeks. So depends what you want more, to save a few bucks or get your refund ASAP.
Easy solution - reduce your withholding so you don't have much of a refund, and/or don't be so broke that you care about your refund.

Does CashApp still offer free federal and state filing? I've been using them for a couple of years with no issue.
I believe so. I got an email from them recently giving me an estimate return. Will be doing this again this year.

You can always use Cash App Tax Filing. It's free for basic returns and no income cap.

And it's pretty good. Been using it since credit karma switched.

Old school, print out the state and mail it first-class $0.65 I think
assuming you don't wait until April 15th after the post office is closed to submit... Though I don't have state tax and have gotten this deal in previous years because it's cheaper than the Deluxe version with just federal.

Buy now or HOLD?
buy. doesn't usually get cheaper than $20, sometimes MAYBE down to $15 but I wouldn't count on it. I got it for $18 last year in March, so if you aren't in a hurry to get yours done you might save a buck.

how many times can you use this H&R deluxe?

edit: 5 federal e-files state is extra

You can prepare atleast 5 Federal returns and e-file them, even if its for different people. Same situation for State preparation. However, for every State e-file, you'll have to pay separately as State program is included with Deluxe+State but efile is not included.

Long time user of hr block.. but i think im about done with them. I input my w2 data the other day and i was shocked at the return. Thinking something was wrong i went to turbo tax online and entered the same data and got a 1300 difference. Turbo tax also had my ev credit form available.

I've tried that with Block the last couple of years when doing my Dad's return, with data mostly coming from Fidelity, as I recall. Hundreds of trades in a managed account. The grouping into short/long, basis reported/not reported, was all wrong and it took more time to check the download than it did to enter them myself. I believe some trades simply didn't make the DL either. It was a mess.
