Seiko Men's Japanese-Automatic Watch with Stainless-Steel Strap, Silver. This piece Iooks very simiIiar to the Seiko SARB033 which was in the mid 300 price range years ago. l am not aware if this is a successor to it but it is a good price point considering it has very simiIar specs. Good piece for any watchbox.

It's mostly about the competition. For $240 I could pick up an Orient Mako III with sapphire crystal and a slightly better movement, or spend a bit more and move up to the $300-500 range (where there's a diverse selection of JDM models). Hardlex scratches fairly easily and is a pain to polish so I generally avoid it.
This is the SZSB014 model and it's JDM. This is a good deal as the secondary market is selling over the amazon price.

That and Seikos prices have gone up a bit in the last five years. What was once a $70 is $100+.

Yep. I can remember buying my SARB033 for about this price a few years back, and while this is an attractive watch with similar vibes, that SARB is at least twice the watch this is. But this seems to be a decent deal nowadays, especially if you can score that coupon.

Why is this a deal? Simply based on MSRP? Seems pricey for a Seiko with a plastic crystal. I can get a MIDO with sapphire and MUCH better movement for the same amount.

Talk about from $240 to $500. That's double.

Might as well go even a little more to $1000 right

The person you responded to isn't really as hard to understand as you're making it sound like. He's saying $240 for a JDM watch with a non-sapphire crystal isn't a good value, or at least not an offering that appeals to him. He doesn't want to pay $240 for a watch whose face will scratch relatively easily.

It says $241 and deals like that can be had at both Ashford and Jomashop. Mido and Tissot both. Just last month there were several around $250 with discount codes.

All of the movements are in-house and made in Japan, but not all of their watches are made in Japan - the cheaper ones are usually assembled at one of Seiko Epson's international factories. The factory/production code should indicate whether a model is JDM and where it's manufactured.

For the Orient Mako III, the four colorways on Amazon USA are international releases. The blue model (RA-AA0818L19B) is currently $240.90 so I used it as an example.
There are also two JDM variants (RN-AA0816L, RN-AA0817Y) that are only available from Japanese sellers (on eBay, Seiya Japan, Sakura Watches, Buyee, etc.).
