Question for anyone who uses airtags. It's been suggested to get one to put on my dog in case he got loose, but don't they only have a range of 30 ft or so? I'm not sure how that would be very effective in this situation. Am I missing something?

The 30ft range to use the compass/Bluetooth feature.

If other iPhone are within the area (within 30ft) it will ping the surrounding area giving you a general idea where you dog is last via 'find me' feature. It's dependent if the neighborhood your dog is lost in is filled with iPhone users

Walmart has these similar keychains for $1.
Protective Holder with Carabiner-Style Ring for Apple AirTag, Silicone, Multi Colors, 4 Count https://www.walmart.com/ip/583906543

Not the same. Walmart has the pass through in the back. Design wise the Amazon ones are better.

I wouldn't use these to actually keep an AirTag on a key ring but as a small bit of protection to keep one in the glove box or a suitcase it'll do fine.

The range is relatively short yes but that range is from basically anyone who has an iPhone/iPad not just your phone. You could be miles away or on the other side of the planet and still be able to track the location. That's what makes them so good as a tracker and a bit scary when it comes to abuse.
Thanks. I didn't know this. I use an android, so I'm guessing they won't work for me. Or would I still be able to track via someone else's phone?

Thanks. Since I use an android, could I still make use of an Airtag?

Won't work for you at all. Only works with Apple devices so you'd need an iPhone or iPad to even set them up. Samsung does have similar trackers and Google is working on their own version. I'm not sure how good the Samsung ones are and if Samsung phones are included in the tracking network by default. There are others, Tile is the one most people have probably heard of but they don't generally work as well because people need to have the Tile app installed and running for their phone to help you track your tag so they are much less useful when you aren't personally near the tracker. Every iPhone being included in the tracking network by default makes the Air tag tracking network really good automatically. You can opt out but requires turning off Find My IIRC which I don't think most people want to do.

Airtags are not compatible with android. You'll have to buy another brand like Tile, or Samsung smarttag

Thanks for the information and repped. That's what I suspected, but I didn't know that much about them.
