I went through three x700s that all froze or showed corrupted video roughly halfway through a number of 4k discs. These same 4k discs would then play fine on a XBox One X. I always assumed it was just some layer transition issue that seemed to be fairly common with Sony players based on how many times I saw other people complain of similar issues.

After giving up on Sony, I went with the "fan favorite" Panasonic UB820. I haven't had any issues with it, and it just generally looks better with both 4K discs and upscaling standard blu-rays. Also something to keep in mind with the UB820 is that it's one of the Panasonic players that lets you bypass some region locks on Region B/C discs.
I've had this 4k Blu-Ray player since 2018. My experience has mostly been good. One note: this player has an automatic sleep mode after 15 or 20 minutes. As far as I know, it can't be disabled. This winds up being really annoying if you pause a show or movie that doesn't read where you left off watching. Breaking Bad on Blu-Ray is one example.
This isn't a fix. I had this player, followed these instructions, and still had issues.

These players are just very hit or miss, some are good, others aren't.

If you buy, play some 4k discs during your return window and make sure ya got a good one

Any thoughts on this? Reviews are really strong, but I've been reading some freezing and Dolby Video complaints. Wondering if it's legit or just Panny fanboys.

"If you're also a gamer, it may be worth taking a look at the Xbox One S, which can play Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR10, and costs just a touch more than the UBP-X700."
Hmm, that's an oddly not-glowing statement in an otherwise glowing review. You can get XB1S's used for $50 all over the place. No DV, though.

I have both the X700 and Panasonic UB420. For a projector setup, the hdr tone mapping gives the edge to the UB420. For a tv setup probably not enough difference to matter. Only issue with the Sony is I've had 2 discs where it hit a spot that would not play. The UB420 sailed through with no issues. Only 2 discs out of a couple dozen, but that was enough for me.

Edit: Forgot about the DV. For me it didn't matter since my Epson projector doesn't support it, but if it's important to you, that might give the x700 the edge for tv since the ub420 doesn't support it

Yeah, that drives me nuts, just like the ridiculous Universal screensaver on all their discs. This is why firmware hacks should be a thing. I don't want any of their garbage.

I have two of these Sony 4k players in my home and love the quality of the picture and sound. With the HDMI cable going straight to my Yamaha receiver, then to my TV, the sound is OUTSTANDING!!!

On that note, I tried to connect the HDMI out 1 from the Blu-Ray player straight into the TV, then the HDMI 2 into my receiver. I get the picture but no sound. I set the Blu-Ray player Audio to HDMI 2 but still did not work.

It seems like the receiver will not switch to the audio in, from the player. I'm really stump with this and do not know a solution. Any help is much appreciated!!

BTW, TV is a LG C1 and receiver is a Yamaha TSR-700.

Thank you, as well.

Also, for anyone interested, I was at Walmart earlier today and regular price is indeed $189.
I'm passing based on the helpful comments here. May look for a deal on that mythical Panny player.

I've had the well documented skipping issues with certain discs. It seems to be only with certain longer running movies. It might be when it switches to a different layer of the disc it freezes or skips.

This was never $250. I got it on a previous deal for $60 refurb.
