The deal would probably state if it were refurbished. That said, all the Adorama deals that I have seen have been new; the refurb deals (like the one I bought) have been from denon.com.

Bought this last month last time it was $349. Works great and honestly sounds the same as my X3800h that I have in a different room even after applying room adjustments.

Adorama is definitely a 1st rate retailer. "It has been said" immediately puts you in bs territory.

They've been selling photo and video gear since forever and they're one of the top 3 in the business.

I'm a denon fanboy but scrape together enough money to get the pioneer elite 305 in order to get Dirac. Audyssey on this Denon is borderline useless.
Pioneer lx 305 is way better in my opinion

Unless you're really on a budget, I would go up to the AVR-X1800H. It's on sale direct from Denon for $599 + 30% with the promo code (7F77XSQ7NS) for a final price of $419.

There are no audible improvements going from the s970 to x1800.

The x1800 has the next tier of room correction which could give it the advantage in some situations: Audyssey MultEQ XT vs Audyssey MultEQ

No. I bought one of these from Adorama on a previous deal months ago. Was brand new.

Same here. However the AV drops for a couple seconds every hour or so. Updated the firmware, using awesome cables. The same TV worked flawlessly with an Onkyo receiver.

Wrong. You have to get to the 3800 to get xt32. You always had to get the 3xxx level Denon to start getting xt32. That why I've had the 3500, 3600, and now the 3800.

I spoke to Denon tech support many time regarding this, they always recommended going with x1700 or x1800 over s960,970!

call them tomorrow and ask for clarification

The X series has historically been the "IN-command" AVR's that offered mutlizone outputs for custom installations and have 1 yr additional warranty. I've owned 3 of them. If I worked for Denon I would push customers towards higher priced units too.

I would agree the higher tier room correction should be helpful audibly.

As people often say better room correction is a game changer, the 1800 is a better one.
