Bought this last month last time it was $349. Works great and honestly sounds the same as my X3800h that I have in a different room even after applying room adjustments.

Adorama is not necessarily a 1st rate retail seller. It's been said that they get floor display models or refurbs and sell them as new. Either way, the one person said the Pioneer Elite might be a better unit. Any thoughts?
Adorama is definitely a 1st rate retailer. "It has been said" immediately puts you in bs territory.

They've been selling photo and video gear since forever and they're one of the top 3 in the business.

There's been some terrible reviews out about the Denon S970H; the one guy on YouTube said he finally
returned his.
Not surprising, you'll always find opposing reviews.
There are too many variables for any review to actually tell how something will perform to you in your environment.

Owning it and using it properly often vary significantly.
Room correction software is a perfect example!

This isn't true at all in my experience. They've been around forever and are honest and have great customer service imo

Comes back a day after I buy the A-S301. Is it a sign?

Can I just skip the rears and run 3.1?

Adorama has been great but with the talk in threads of people buying receivers and returning chasing deals as they pop up, I'm sure you're gonna get some open boxed receivers. A lot of people keep chasing the next deal instead of just researching and understanding their needs and waiting for their target receiver.

I'd like to see a double blind listening test of this avr versus some other "better" avr in the same price/power category, with all audio controls set to flat.
My prediction is they couldn't tell them apart ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ
I had this 970 for a few months and sold it. I've also had the 760H and 920W. Yes, most receivers sound very similar when listening to music in direct mode. How receivers sound when decoding movie soundtracks can vary greatly. Denon is known for its softer sound profile and almost every professional review reflects this. I've done a ton of receiver swapping in the same system and my ears definitely prefer Yamaha and Onkyo when it comes to action movie soundtracks.

Edit - odd the forum replied me to the wrong postโ€ฆ for the individual who asked -

Yes. 3.1 Front stage and sub are the most important. You could look into wireless for rears if running wires is an issue.

I had the opposite opinion. My Yamaha sound was warmer than my Denon. Speakers may play a role in the sound profile we think we're hearing.

Yes. There are a lot of myths about the sound of certain receivers. When ppl prove they can hear these differences 100% in a double blind test, I'll believe them. Otherwise it's impossible to overcome human confirmation bias. If you already believe a denon amp has a certain sound, you are certain to hear it.
Just like speaker cables that vary in price from $1 to $1000 sound the same in double blind tests after ppl claim to hear differences.

Exactly. Ppl will argue to the ends of the earth that Denon or
Marantz sound "warm" but can't prove it 100% in a double blind test. Humans have terrible audio "memory". This is why ppl still believe electronics "break in" when it's their brain that "break in" and gets used to the new sound.
No one has ever claimed anything has ever sounded "worse" after "break in". Funny how that works.

Adorama charged me $120 for return shipping after quoting me for $75. Insane.

Purchased at the military store for $362 last September, and found this receiver to be excellent. No issues at all and fantastic audio quality. No real need for Audyssey or 8k video, just good multichannel sound. HEOS is good but just too many ads.
