FreeTaxUSA is very limited and will not handle most personal income tax returns. In addition, it is a web-based software and you agree to share your personal information for marketing purposes. Not worth the risk of security issues and risking personal information.

Why do people buy tax software instead of just going into the mobile app?
The online version (which is the same as the app) is less powerful and more expensive than the download. The software download also lets you complete multiple returns for one price (family member or friends). Plus you keep your personal data off of someone else's server in the cloud, which reduces the chances it gets leaked in a security breach. The only advantage I see to online is the ability to work from multiple devices, including mobile ones that wouldn't be able to run the software download.

It's not a lie that your info is stored on servers since it's a cloud based protocol. This software is local with cloud based options.

Many free tax softwares don't handle schedule E and other things beyond w2 and 1099-int. However, not all of them are so limited.

Guess what, the pay ones have been caught sharing your info without your permission and sued over it...

I use Tax Free USA with 1099s, schedule E, bonds, stock sales, etc... with no issues.

Most other free/low cost ones also handle all those just fine.

I've been using Cash App (old credit karma taxes) for years without issues. It handles most of the things most of the fillers will need. This is very personal, but if you're concerned about your data, it's valid to be concerned with the free services. But with the state of online data handling these days, I just assume everyone is mishandling my data. So why pay someone to not handle my data correctly?

FreeTaxUSA is not from the IRS, but it is free for federal e-file and $15 for (each) state. It can handle pretty much any personal tax scenario. Not sure about business taxes.

The IRS is piloting IRS Direct File this year in 12 states, but limited scenarios are covered. They plan to expand the functionality in coming years. More info: https://www.irs.gov/about-irs/a-c...file-pilot [irs.gov]
Technically IRS doesn't even need to ask most people to enter everything since they already have exact same info we enter from the same source where we work or earn.
Just need to show their calc first and ask to enter if there is any adjustments (deduction or foreign income/tax credit) in theory like other countries.
But it is working like a poker game now that they don't show their hands until we show ours first, then screw if ours are not correct for their view.

That has always been the most frustrating thing for me - why should I have to reenter the data the government already has. It's more time consuming and error prone. In addition, if I want to import from my various banks/brokerages, I have to use that login and password, potentially compromising security, just to bring in information the IRS already has.

In my opinion, Direct File could be a real revolution if they incorporate this functionality. OR maybe, just maybe, the existence of Direct File will force the commercial tax software industry to actually innovate and then maybe then they'll incorporate this kind of functionality. Other than adding an online option that is more expensive and less functional, nothing has changed with the functionality of tax software in decades.

You almost certainly do not need premium. I actually can't find any proof that premium does anything that deluxe doesn't, regardless of the marketing nonsense.

Deluxe supports schedule C and E for rental income. No need for premium - it's all deceptive marketing!

It's my understanding that all of the versions support all of the forms, the difference is their wizards that help you to complete said forms. So for example you could use Deluxe to manually fill out a Schedule E, but if you want to use their rental income wizard you'd need Premium.

Or am I misunderstanding?
