FreeTaxUSA is very limited and will not handle most personal income tax returns. In addition, it is a web-based software and you agree to share your personal information for marketing purposes. Not worth the risk of security issues and risking personal information.

I have a small business on the side. In the past I have used Premium because I thought I needed to for mileage deductions, depreciation, etc on a vehicle. Is there a feature in Deluxe that will do that as well?

Yes, Deluxe will handle everything about your schedule C.

You are the man! How am I supposed to do with the first state as not activating state? I thought you can only activate and download state filing once per copy
I've been doing this for few years now. Basically you don't start out pick the state ac do that at the end after making a copy of your fed on second computer. Any changes that affect states will need to be done on both machines, so a bit of work and hence doing this at the end. I do this for PA av NY and efile on 2nd and mail on the first machine.

Thank you! I've been paying for additional state for many years. I wish I heard from you earlier🥹

The government lobbying to keep tax prep more complicated so Americans wouldn't need Intuit's services is especially nauseating
Agreed. A greed that is disgusting.

Net $15 is here!
Just bought yesterday for 20 bucks from newegg. Activated it. Is there a way to get a replacement or refund and get this offer instead?

Note: State e-file is not included. It's a $19.95 add-on.
Is efile.is included on the other deal where it is 20 bucks deluxe+ state with coupon code?

Doubtful on a refund, but you could ask Newegg. Federal e-file is included, but not state with both deals. It's the same software. You may be able to e-file directly on your state's website for free. Here's a list of state's that support that:

No, only for the current tax year. You may share the code with other 4 other friends to reduce the cost.
H&R can't make money if they allow you next year.

I used freetaxusa this year. It was free and took half the time as turbotax/HRBlock usually takes me. I'll never go back to paying to do my taxes.

That has always been the most frustrating thing for me - why should I have to reenter the data the government already has. It's more time consuming and error prone. In addition, if I want to import from my various banks/brokerages, I have to use that login and password, potentially compromising security, just to bring in information the IRS already has.

In my opinion, Direct File could be a real revolution if they incorporate this functionality. OR maybe, just maybe, the existence of Direct File will force the commercial tax software industry to actually innovate and then maybe then they'll incorporate this kind of functionality. Other than adding an online option that is more expensive and less functional, nothing has changed with the functionality of tax software in decades.
Just FYI. Singapore has a similar tax system, but lower taxes. When the tax season starts, the sg gov does your taxes for you and asks you to verify the information or make amends through the online portal or the mobile app.
And they copied the system from the US, but they perfected it over the years. It's mind boggling that IRS is unable to do the same in 2024.

A cleaner writeup of my earlier post which was on the App about how to do multiple taxes using the same software liscense and 2 machines as I've been doing this for few years now:
  1. Start and pretty much finish your Federal Taxes but dont start your State taxes at all or pick your state as once you do that the software downloads and marks your Fed file as such.
  2. Copy the T22/T23 etc file and install the software on 2nd machine.
  3. Now you can start the states on both machines.
  4. The state information sort of works itself out but any changes to your Fed taxes you'll have to make it on both machines if it affects the respective state filings and hence the earlier note about starting the State taxes towards the end of your filing.
  5. Be sure to only eFile Fed from 1 of the machines as I do it generally on the Primary machine and have ran into an issue once and had to eFile from machine 2 and had to make more changes there 2nd time but was not a lot of work.

I do this for PA/NY taxes and its been working just fine as NY is eFile for free and for PA I sometimes pay to eFile or mail depending on the software as at times it wont let me eFile due to Foreign taxes etc.
