I don't know why you're getting unhelpful votes. This used to be THE way to do it and anything else was wasting time and gas. I also just tried it and it no longer works.
I think a bunch of people think the home depot hack is unethical and down vote anyone who talks about it. Home Depot could put a stop to it in less than a week if they didn't want us doing it.

1 When you order, send sander to your preferred store, send the battery to another store. Don't pick up the battery. When they call, tell them you no longer need it. They will refund it to your card.
2. Return battery to store.
