Yeah but you have to be pretty broke to qualify

NYT made a video regarding Turbo Tax. I used to use credit karma tax, but didn't know their tax program went to cash app after. I'll do my taxes there next filing...

Have used Cash App (formerly Credit Karma) last two years and have been happy.
Am in the process of using Cash App Tax now to get rolling, was a TT user the past few years. Is it really totally free? Im not going to get to the end and find that the refund will only go to my Cash App balance or some nonsense like that? Whats weird so far is that it forced me to 'make a new account' after signing in with my phone number (same one i used to sign up for cash app years ago), and then it tried to tell me my address was my childhood home. The cash app is all phone based obviously so working through a web site now has some continuity hiccups.

Its free for AGI below $45k (unless i am misreading that somehow). I have a hard time thinking this is 'most people.' Is the limit higher if youre MFJ? The median household agi in the US is $67k so way more than half of households dont fall into the free category.

Anyone care to elaborate what kinda things cashapp taxes wouldn't be good for? I imagine the only people that wouldn't want to use it would be business or rental property owners?
Cash App Taxes is actually pretty powerful. Here is a list of what they don't support: https://taxeshelp.cash.app/s/arti...ot-support

and what they do support: https://taxeshelp.cash.app/s/arti...es-support

They do actually support Schedule E for rental income. I am guessing the most common stumbling block is multi-state taxes, which they don't support.

It's 100% free if your AGI is under the Free File cutoff, but there is no income limit to complete federal taxes for free with FreeTaxUSA. It does cost $15 to e-file the state. That fee and upgrades to improve support are where they make money, but they do not restrict the functionality of the software, nor do they hide these fees and try to get you to upgrade in the middle. All of this is crystal clear from their homepage.

100% free for Cash App. Either they support your tax situation or they don't, but either way, there are no charges. It's a sad state of affairs that customers pretty much expect a bait and switch thanks to the Intuit/H&R Block tactics they've experienced in the past.

Nope, there is no income limit for federal taxes. You get state free if your AGI meets the Free File criteria, but everyone else pays $15 for state e-file with them. Still cheaper than many options. Cash App taxes is 100% free, including state and regardless of income, as long as they cover your situation.

Freetaxusa sounds like scam website. Wondering if it is as secure as Turbo Tax.
I've used them 2 years in a row. It was $15 to e-file state for me. They seemed perfectly legit to me, it worked fine & I have been satisfied. Previous to Freetaxusa I successfully used credit karma before they were taken over by cashapp. I also try at least 2 different online tax services each year to make sure that the numbers that they produce agree with each other before I actually file with one.

Is this just for easy returns? I normally have to buy the premium tax software due to rental properties. Can creditksrma handle that stuff?

it seems that this is a totally free turbotax. Cash App Taxes and FreeTaxUSA also support Schedule E for rental income FWIW. The deluxe *desktop* version of TT and H&R Block also support Schedule E despite the marketing.

I'm the type that prefer the prompts though. Does this version offer all the prompts for inputs? If it just pulls up a tax form and I'm expected to know where each items goes, I'll pass. I normally use the HR block premium software.

They all still guide you. No need to go to the forms directly unless you want to (and if supported, not everyone supports direct form entry). If you do go with HR Block, no need for Premium - Deluxe download will get the job done.
