TurboTax desktop is more powerful and has fewer upsells. For example, Deluxe handles investment income, rental income, etc. Online forces you to upgrade to Premiere for these things. Also, with the desktop, your data is not in the cloud, only your local PC. Desktop allows you to complete multiple federal returns for one fixed price, but online charges for each return. Online versions do let you work from any device seamlessly, including mobile. They also keep a copy of your return for future years or as an archive.
As for free versions for people that don't qualify for Free File, Cash App taxes is totally free (federal and state) and should work for the vast majority of people. there are a few things that aren't supported like multistate taxes. FreeTaxUSA is free for federal e-file and $15 for state e-file. OLT.com is similar.
If your state supports it, you can e-file directly on the state dept of revenue website for free.
For those who have Costco membership, for the same price you get 10$ additional discount in product add-on which can be used for state e-file fee.

Thanks for the tips. So if I mail it in I don't pay. Got it. I haven't bought yet but I did notice that Deluxe version description doesn't mention anything about investments or crypto.
The retail installed version TT Deluxe does do investments. Crypto is just an investment
Both Block and TT do try to make it appear that you need a higher version than you do with their literature and charts. If you go to their site and click through their recommendations it will tell you need Premier when you don't.
Worse Block and TT online offerings of the same name are different than the boxed/installed versions.
They give you less than the retail versions. What that means to you is that of You buy Deluxe retail you can do your investments but with Deluxe Online you will have to pay for an upgrade to do investments.
Never pay for the online versions as they are a rip-off is the takeaway there.
i suggest using free ones or paid ones then print it out and spend another 10-20 dollars sending the documentation in just to have the IRS look through them manually and if they use a scanner hey they could not scan as easily.
this is a trick businesses do most likely to give extra work for IRS.
If IRS wants to do extra work for 100 dollars in return sure go ahead but they are wasting tax payer money going after you at that point. I am not giving them extra money by chasing after me or anyone making w-2 income.
tax cheats are usually multi millionaires and billionaires that owe 100k+ in taxes if audited. IRS will not go after them because they have lawyers and would rather settle outside.
thus go after 1-10k taxes that are owed instead. At this point until I see the gov go after the elite wealthy that tax dodge as a protest I am sending in paper copies of taxes to tell them to get off their asses and do work on rich people not poor people.
I'm not going to be paying any tax software ever at all. these tax software companies can go sell to turbo tax Timmy that conducted money laundering schemes during 2008 GFC was part of the muppet doing gods work goldman sachs, and Became treasury just like Janet Yellen that took Citadel money and goldman money. crooks.
please send in paper documents for taxes instead and also fill out your w4 so you dont over pay them.
Mailing a state return cost like $2 at most. What in God's name are you doing that it costs you $20.
Not unhinged enough to think I have to pay for every upgrade or extra that somebody tries to sell. God help that man if he gets where he can really be taken advantage of. What are we supposed to do, stay quiet as he walks off a cliff? I'd say the same to any friend or loved one especially of they are so confused they are telling others supposed facts that are 100% wrong.

I really had no idea that the desktop version was better. I always just used the online version. Last year I paid $44 for TurboTax premium thanks to a 20% discount from RobinHood and a $10 reward from Chase credit card. The original price was $70 before discounts. Now they want $90 before discounts plus the discounts have been reduced. 😞

The marketing is deceptive. It's supported.

Second this!
Yes, schedule E for rentals is supported and I believe the guidance is the same or minimally different. Haven't dealt with this in several years though.

Maybe I will consider it this year just want something basic in guidance and get the max deductions.
FreeTaxUSA also supports rental properties, both short-term and long-term, including depreciation.
Freetax is not free if you need state. That name is really very deceptive. You lose the ability to do unlimited multiple returns and the five federal eifiles. Can't play with multiple returns to compare scenarios and a couple other downsides are the inability to print out and save supporting a full return with supporting worksheets and we have the risk and security vulnerabilities with a web-based interface.
A better recommendation Block Deluxe hat has been coming on around $20 lately

This is all true except the part about printing worksheets. And while the name is clearly for search engine optimization, it is crystal clear on the homepage that state is $15. The rest are generally the pros and cons of desktop vs online tax software.
Agreed that HR Block deluxe desktop for $20 is also great deal. The decision in my mind boils down to whether or not you want to do it online or keep things local only. Assuming you don't have multiple returns to complete.

They keep it all vague for a reason. You can see we even have people her telling us like it is truth that we must pay more when we really don't have to.
Also consider Block Deluxe that has been around $20 recently. If you can use one you can use another.
The free options are no Joke. If I was in my early 20s, the first listed would have worked well. I'm a teacher and show my kiddos who got their first job to use that one to get their money back. May not be in the math curriculum, but man do they pay attention.
We need more teachers like you!!! The only thing we learned about was credit scores..

I might be wrong about the worksheets but did see that stated in a forum.
It should be clear, and I find the name a nasty ploy. As we can see here many do not always read in depth and if somebody starts a federal, they might not find to after much work they have to end up paying anyway.
I like to know all options, but we must be clear about what they are.
Many are recommending them like they are some alternatives to the tax industry and they just like the rest of them want to be paid for what they do.
