Bunion Surgery

70,256 5,366 February 8, 2024 at 07:20 AM in Help
Well it has been a couple of years since my last surgery so I guess I am due, right? Annoyed

As a kid seeing the bunions on my grandmother's feet I thought they were like calluses..... they are not. it's basically your toe bone dislocating itself, fun times.

I have the goobers and am extremely independent and don't want to be unable to walk or drive too long.

There is a procedure called a modified McBride and it only has a 2 week in walking boot downtime then back to reg shoes if able. No hospital stay, twilight sedation with a local and no metal inserted. They remove a sesamoid bone and shave part of the outward knuckle.

Seemed like the best option. Most other options require 8 to 12 weeks off the foot and includes metal.

After being on the internet TOO much I am having some anxiety Stick Out Tongue go figure.

I read threads in Reddit's sub-forum as googled for medical journal articles and while this is prob ok, it might be better to get a procedure called Chevron. From what I am finding it's 6- 8 weeks in a walking boot and includes metal but a slightly less occurrence of things shifting and needing more work.

Anyone here have any experience with either?

I also want to be healed up before late spring so I can take care of my yard and plants.

Sorry for lack of timely updates ...
The foot is healing well but I'm exhausted and a bit foggy brained and avoided logging in since I'd prob try to help with something and mess it up laugh out loud

The first few days was a lot of icing it and elevation plus these stylish (laugh out loud) compressor things to avoid blood clots.

I haver had laser therapy 4 times now...2 before and 2 after, 2 more to go. The nerves are getting jumpy and stabby.

VERY heart GLAD to hear from you!! But not at all surprised you got scolded for trying to do too much too soon. The nerves getting jumpy and stabby is a GOOD thing, means healing has occurred and they're waking up. Keep massaging and GENTLY being active, and you'll be in great shape in no time.

I've had to spent the last two weeks reminding my significant other to sit down and prop up her foot. She banged a toe into the deck a few weeks ago, and refused to give it any opportunity to heal. DOH! Doh

Comfort

Yeah...the day of, I was all chatty from adrenaline. Wed. I behaved, Thurs my neighbor took me out to the store just to get out and I walked a little bit and it seemed fine.. ummmmmm then Friday I drove myself over to see my mom (abut 30 min away) and walked the dogs about half a mile. Big Grin
Sat... half a mile, Sun. half a mile. Monday 1.5 miles which was a bit to much. Tuesday.. tech said my bandages told on me.. Oops laugh out loud Apparently they used zip stitches... and one is coming a bit loose. Now I just today looked that up and they look cool and now I kinda want to play with them laugh out loud but I won't.

Dr asked me is I was trying to undo all of his good work. I said no.. you just did sucha good job it really doesn't hurt much. he did like that response. But after that first Wed I have been fairly exhausted and just foggy headed.

heh One of the first days I tried walking them.. a squirrel crossed the sidewalk in front of us. The dogs held well enough but the fricking squirrel ran alongside of the nearest house then crossed back over the sidewalk right behind me and well that was too much temptation and they almost took me flying.
Holding as tightly as I could and threatening to put my foot so far up their butt they'd see my toes when they bark they decided to acquiesce laugh out loud
