Wow, this is insane. Let me just start out by saying RAID is not a backup and you need to backup both new and refurbished drives.

$6.83 per GB may be an all-time low.

I've been using them for years and no issue

2018 model. These will definitely have 5+ years powered on. Pass.

Ultrastar HC550 (2020) and HC560 (2021) drives are worthwhile. The HC570s are too new and they dont have refurbs yet.

Can you reallllllly trust refurbed HDD tho?
I can trust them as much as I can trust my drives currently in use. I always backup critical data.

Did you try using the power molex to SATA or covering the third.pin? Do these have power disable?
I don't think they have power disable but I tried again with an adapter. One makes a shrieking noise, another more of a whine, another rhythmic clicking and the PC can't post with them attached. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

I've bought 2x 2TB hard drives from this seller, goHardDrive, in the past. I had problems with one of them; it couldn't reallocate some bad sectors. The seller promptly sent me a replacement for it. I have used them for over 6 years in a RAID1 setup in my primary machine at home. And yes, I have a NAS where I regularly back up the data, and I have a backup for the NAS too! laugh out loud I'm about to retire them as I need more capacity, hence me browsing this thread!

You will have to do some extra work to stress test these refurbs a bit after receiving them, but it's a fair trade off IMO for getting them at about 1/3 the price of a new one.

Yes, and they are a heavier duty line of drives than most NAS-oriented drives are.
They are probably going to be a little louder. Otherwise (and honestly even then, I can set up baffles to deflect noise), just better overall in my experience).

It's just a little too small to displace my 10TB and 8TB drives. I think I need 16TB to buy replacements.
Any similar deals on 14/16tb?

I'm in similar boat. 4x12tb RAID5 in my Qnap close to 90% capacity. Ideally would move to 18-20tb but 16tb at similar pricing would make me move.

But these are refurbs and 5yrs old. I'd much rather pay 2x per gb for a brand new drive. These are like 70% used.
I'd rather buy these at half the price and get them replaced for free for 5 years if they fail. Which hasn't happened yet and I've been buying them for years.

After weighing all the options I went with these drives with a 5yr warranty, for a few more bucks https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...ZMGS&psc=1

You're basically buying used hard drive.

These drives are probably past half of their design life. So some dying quickly is not surprising.

I have have 4 4TB RAID6... Would it be better to replace with 2 16T, or 4 8TB?

I highly doubt those are new. How do they know they have 0 bad sectors if they weren't recovered and tested?
its new. i bought like 7+ recently for backup. checked, all has 0-1 hour usage/power on.

2x16tb would be better future proof.
