8GB RAM, slower single channel 256GB SSD, 60Hz display, last generation chip, new model on the way in less than a month. It's a pass for me.

I've been a mac user since 2001 and have similar thoughts here lol.

When the iPhone got popular, it brought a lot of jerks into the apple fanbase hug

You're not going to be able to touch this price with the new chips onboard, duh! Why do you think they're on sale? With not much excitement around the new chips, the M2's are fine.
And stop with the "need 16gb ram".
It's all you Windows users that don't understand how a Mac runs. Read up on it.
smh
I brought an Apple with 32GB to its knees just using Chrome. You don't know what you're talking about Mr 8GB of RAM.

My read on this RAM situation is that Apple has gotten greedy, knowing people are tied to the Mac ecosystem. They are effectively making the 8 GB pricing appealing for mass users, such that it forces them to upgrade the laptop within 3 to 5 years because of the operating system updates, which will clearly require more memory as time goes on. The 2nd option is that you buy the 16 GB ram but you pay at least $500 more for it and Apple makes their money upfront. You may upgrade the laptop 6-9 years with this 2nd option before it's super sluggish for majority of the users. The problem with the 2nd option is these laptops past 5 years could experience a mechanical failure - like a key stops working or issues with your screen.. none of which is covered by warranty - and then the larger ram purchase is not worth it.

Because of the large cost Difference for RAM, seems 8gb is the way to go and just plan to upgrade 3-5 years out (assuming your daily workload is sustainable with 8gb and you are looking for a light, 15" Apple laptop). For hard drive I'm now just committed to making iCloud my hard drive.. so the small hard drive space is a don't care. Bottom line is that Apple wins big either way cause you're stuck with their ecosystem.

I have a 16gb M1 Air. System itself upon boot up usues like 7 ish gb. I use it mainly for software development. I compared it to my legion go (16gb) of ram and the legion uses a little less ram overall with the same use case (around 10 ish gb ram). I also always close apps int he background on both so if someone isn't midful of that, maybe will use more.
Good thing I didn't settle for 8gb of ram and did more research. This video explains it
8GB M3 Mac vs 16GB Windows PC - Did Apple LIE to You?! - YouTube
I'd say if you are only a casual user (internet, documents, etc), this would maybe be enough. Then again, why pay this price if you can have a cheaper 16gb option for windows. I get it when people are just apple fans and like the eco system. If I didn't want to build IOS apps using swift and xcode, I would have stuck to my Dell XPS 13 plus. Otherwise I think Macs are good for development but overpriced.
Fair l, I only use Mac because of the absurd battery life.

Also would like to know
Im still using a 2013.5 macbook air with 4GB ram. It's an extra and not main laptop, but for basic browsing, zoom calls, spreadsheets, it works just fine. A bit slow at this point, but not terrible.

So I would say for basics, 8 is fine for most. And you would be hard pressed to find a windows laptop that old that still functions.

The 512GB version is on sale for $1200. Not bad, but only 8GB of RAM.

This is, IMHO, exactly the use case for a MacBook Air. Even as good as the Apple Silicon chips are with performance, I wouldn't recommend these as someone's only computer.

I had one of those 2013s as well. Ended up getting a 2014 macbook pro as well because I got a crazy good deal on it back then. I still really liked using the Air because it was so thin and light and had a better keyboard than the pro - just a remarkably worse screen lol.

The 15" air actually has a pretty decent screen! And amazing speakers.

Ah but yea. For a second computer to putz around, I think the 8gb/256gb is fine. If this is going to be your only computer, please consider the 16/1tb or a macbook pro instead.

8gb is enough for a portable..just once you start doing power user stuff (like running parallels), you're gonna want 16..
but I've had no issues with 8gb for "normal OS X stuff"

put linux mint xfce on it..it's lightweight on memory and the MacBook will run much better

You sound weird claiming a 3.3 lb laptop is like a desktop in weight. Thats ridiculous. The laptop also supports a power brick that weights almost nothing compared to many other laptops. Most likely in one year I travel and see the world more than you do. Africa, Australia, the Far East, Europe etc. How many people do you know that go to Australia once per year? I dont know what international carriers you fly. But I fly in business class and first and dont see any issue with my laptop of other bags I take on board. that includes Qanatas, Virgin, BA, United, some regional carriers in Africa, etc, I know of no situation where a laptop that weighs 3.3 vs 2.7 is going to be any issue. I also have not seen any issues with people in coach that have a 3 lb laptop.
You use flyer miles and try to cheap out off credit card perks…wtf are you on about

I wish the 13" was on sale for $800-$900. I tried the 15" model but it's big and heavy. Like a portable desktop almost.
The 13" M1 is $749 at costco.

Apparently the 10-core GPU model is slower than the 8-core GPU one and sometimes even the M1 Air, so this is the literal slowest Apple Silicon computer you can get.

So Apple sells many MBAs, which is why an article last month suggested that Jon Ivey was shut down from combining the Air & Pro due to such hefty sales.

Now, knowing that the MBA is a CONSUMER product, and that most stores will carry the base model....it's heavily implied that most MBA consumers are using...8gb of ram.

Why should Apple switch to anything else if most folks have zero issues with it???? That doesn't make sense, eh? Every time there's a deal that's posted the ram crying crew comes out but I don't truly think they've used an entry-level MBA....OR their use cases are so big that it'd be foolish to use an entry-level MBA.

What I'm typing is the consumer are speaking, and they're saying that they don't care. Why not just get the upgraded MBA and beat your feet?
It is not quite as simple as that. If they had 16GB of ram or at least priced it at say 50-100$ more (the cost for them is about 20$ if that, ok say 30-40 if you count in the SSD size increase). The question is how many more people would buy the machine at that price point. I suspect quite a few, plus a lot of negative press from tech circles avoided.

Sure 8GB might be enough for most people but I have an M2 mini and quite often it closes tabs or apps for me to conserve ram. It is getting a bit annoying but for 350$ I really can't complain. At 1000$ mark I expect top of the line computer and 8GB these days is not even mid range. In addition having slower SSDs is nonsense. size I don't care about here but and m1 Mac with 256 GB will have twice as fast storage. Again something you might actually notice if you work with large files.

At 1000$ you get pretty much top of the line thin and light windows machine, say Samsung Galaxy book pro or LG gram or Acer Swift or whatever floats your boat. Plus you get a much better OLED screen, double the RAM. I like apple products but I am not going to buy them at a premium unless they are competitive.
