There is an expiration date on the SIM card kit(about half a year to a year as I could recall), you will have to activate the SIM before that date, or the SIM will become void. Since it's free and unlimited monthly, so I don't think of a good reason to wait(but I could miss something).

Keep in mind that after you start using TextNow's phone number assigned to you, you will need to use it once a while(make calls or send/receive text message) or you will lose the number. You can request for a new number though, so if you don't care about the number much like I do(I mostly make outgoing calls as a backup phone), then you don't worry about losing the number due to inactivity.

Hope that helps.

From my experience, it looks to be VOIP number, like Google voice number.

That's why use Paypal checkout or Virtual Card with $1 limit

textnow is nice to have free (gotta use it once weekly or you'll lose your phone number)

but after reading /r/textnow reddit i'm finding too many people complain that even with
their sim, the phone number will still be seen by sms confirmations as being virtual
thus disqualified. it's worth $1 to find out, but make sure you text it on all your sms
confirmation vendors before paying textnow any more fees.

You need to pay for their phone number lock in service to receive text messages. It's 6.50 a year, which is a bit over 54 cents a month. Not free but it's certainly cheap to keep the service running and to receive texts

it's still VOIP number. Not for confirmation codes. Also for me worse connection quality than without the sim over wifi or data .

So we can just use Google number. Free and no ads. What's the advantage of TextNow?
Google number you'll still need a data plan to use it as mobile. This one comes with a SIM card. I guess I could consider this more like T-Mobile's Digits line with like 512k data service so you can use their app for VOIP?

So when connected to 5G or LTE, you have to use their app as the dialer for phone calls and text? No native phone and messaging integration?

That's not true. I use TextNow sending and receiving hundreds of text messages, even WITHOUT WIFI.

TextNow offers VOIP numbers, just like Google voice numbers, so it's not a real cell numbers, so don't expect for that.
