There is an expiration date on the SIM card kit(about half a year to a year as I could recall), you will have to activate the SIM before that date, or the SIM will become void. Since it's free and unlimited monthly, so I don't think of a good reason to wait(but I could miss something).

Keep in mind that after you start using TextNow's phone number assigned to you, you will need to use it once a while(make calls or send/receive text message) or you will lose the number. You can request for a new number though, so if you don't care about the number much like I do(I mostly make outgoing calls as a backup phone), then you don't worry about losing the number due to inactivity.

Hope that helps.

From my experience, it looks to be VOIP number, like Google voice number.

That's why use Paypal checkout or Virtual Card with $1 limit

So I created a burner google account but don't want to provide my cc upon checkout. If I use PayPal will they try to make additional charges aka autopay?
I don't think so, but you can double check from Paypal(if it sets up the link, you can find it out from Paypal user portal).

I lost the sim. So I've been just using the app with internet access only to make calls and texts. Anyway to replace the lost sim?
Just buy a new SIM to work with your existing TextNow account(with the same phone number). I think the number links to your TextNow account, not the SIM, because people can have the phone number WITHOUT SIM to make calls via WIFI.

By wifi, do you mean data in general (e.g., wifi and cellular)? Cuz I've been using Google Voice for a while, and I can send texts and make calls with cellular data. But it sounds like TextNow works even when there's no data (but has cell phone signal)? Just wanna make sure I don't miss anything. Thanks Smilie
WIFI is the Internet connection you get from home, office, school or McDonald's, etc...
You can use Google voice to make calls with cellular data, is because you pay Verizon/ATT/T-mobile/other providers for the data service, which is not free.

TextNow offers you cellular data for FREE through T-mobile cell towers, by using its SIM and its own app(forcing you to watch some ads), to make VOIP calls. But you can't use its cellular data for any other apps or services on your cell phone.

That is, for example, when you are driving on a highway, no WIFI connection, you can use TextNow's free service to make calls and send/receive text messages, you pay nothing for it.

No.
You can't use Talkatone to make calls on highway(without WIFI), because Talkatone doesn't give you SIM card but TextNow does.
You may use Talkatone over the data service by Verizon/ATT/T-mobile when you are on highway, but that's a different story, because you pay Verizon/ATT/T-mobile. You don't have to pay TextNow monthly.

Would activate soon as get it. I activated a sim last month from 2022 they gave them away for free promo. for some reason it doesn't get data for the textnow app i can only make calls. Text or incoming calls won't work without wifi. I tried 2 different phones android and iphone and proper APN settings.
So if I'm reading this right, while not on WIFI you can send/receive calls to your TN VoIP number and send (but not receive?) text messages all through their app.

So if you're not on WIFI you can't receive text replies through their app until you get back on WIFI?

Also, if you already use Google Voice, you wouldn't be able to receive calls to that number (unless GV lets you link your GV number to automatically ring another VoIP # that you get from TN). Also you can't make calls from your GV number unless on WIFI because you must use the TN app for all calls/texts while away from WIFI.

Did I get anything wrong there? It seems strange that you wouldn't be able to receive texts on the TN app while away from WIFI. Can anyone confirm/correct?

Thanks. I'm not far from you and have had zero issues that I can recall using my old Galaxy. Go figure, right?
I use a 5g phone and my area is fully 5g covered by all providers. Is your phone 5G?

I'm interested in buying this purely for confirmation codes (bank or other institutions). On page 4, a user mentioned that you need to pay $6.50 per year in order to receive confirmation codes and another user posted that you could not use this to receive confirmation codes without paying more. Can anyone else confirm whether the $6.50 yearly charge would really allow you to receive confirmation codes from banks for example?

Also, if I go on a business trip abroad, based on other comments, I can just go on the web to keep the account active, but if I'm abroad, could I still receive confirmation codes?

Sorry if the questions seem simple, just want to make sure I understand everything before I sign up for their yearly service. Appreciate any help!

I, on the other hand, hardly notice them at all. I couldn't even tell you what any of them were for.
I guess it varies per device/person I had ads that take up my screen

Since the app can be used to make a phone call or text in the wifi environment, why need sim card?

Been using textnow for several years. Call quality is decent, text work. But for verification code texts, you have to pay.

Have to use the app to make calls, and actively use (once every 2 weeks) or else lose the number. I mainly use for food delivery since my main number blocks unknown callers.

You don't need the sim if you will use with wifi, the sim is for use anywhere w/o wifi.

PayPal helped Boost steal from my account with unauthorized repeating charges. So better not depend on them.

Maybe try the Privacy app? Been using it for years (usually for trials) and have never once had an issue
