There is an expiration date on the SIM card kit(about half a year to a year as I could recall), you will have to activate the SIM before that date, or the SIM will become void. Since it's free and unlimited monthly, so I don't think of a good reason to wait(but I could miss something).

Keep in mind that after you start using TextNow's phone number assigned to you, you will need to use it once a while(make calls or send/receive text message) or you will lose the number. You can request for a new number though, so if you don't care about the number much like I do(I mostly make outgoing calls as a backup phone), then you don't worry about losing the number due to inactivity.

Hope that helps.

From my experience, it looks to be VOIP number, like Google voice number.

That's why use Paypal checkout or Virtual Card with $1 limit

is there a fake data?
Technically yes. The whole thing is a VOIP service that uses 2G data. For some odd reason, even if you are on the free plan, you can make searches on Google. You can't search on any other engine, but it's nice that you have a way to atleast find addresses and phone numbers when you're away from wifi. So it is data, but not the kind anyone would pay for, ergo I'd call it "fake data."

Are these numbers considered ghost numbers where my identity can't be discovered ? I've seen and heard that people can identity who google voice numbers belong to

I don't think it uses only 2G data. I am OK with the call quality on cellular network(that is, NOT on WIFI), I doubt 2G network can support that kind of call quality. I understand it's a degraded/restricted network from T-mobile to support such free service, but not as bad as 2G data.

Since the app can be used to make a phone call or text in the wifi environment, why need sim card?
When you don't have WIFI like at home or office, when you are on a highway or in a park, you can still make calls with their SIM card.

Explains why my connection is laggy.

So if I'm reading this right, while not on WIFI you can send/receive calls to your TN VoIP number and send (but not receive?) text messages all through their app.

So if you're not on WIFI you can't receive text replies through their app until you get back on WIFI?

Also, if you already use Google Voice, you wouldn't be able to receive calls to that number (unless GV lets you link your GV number to automatically ring another VoIP # that you get from TN). Also you can't make calls from your GV number unless on WIFI because you must use the TN app for all calls/texts while away from WIFI.

Did I get anything wrong there? It seems strange that you wouldn't be able to receive texts on the TN app while away from WIFI. Can anyone confirm/correct?

1. TextNow SIM offers you FREE *DATA* service through T-mobile network, so when you don't have WIFI, you phone can connect to T-mobile's cell towers to get data service.

2. You will have to use TextNow app to access its *DATA* service to do calls and text messages, that is, VOIP!! And only the TextNow app can use mobile data, none of your other apps can use T-mobile network for data(some reported they could do Google search only, but that's all). That is, the TextNow application is VOIP-based, you have the choice to use WIFI for data, or use T-mobile(via the TextNow SIM) for data.

3. With the TextNow app(and you HAVE TO use the TextNow app!), you can make outgoing calls, incoming calls; you can send text messages, receive text messages. This doesn't matter you are on WIFI or on T-mobile cellular network.

It's extremely slow. Feels like 2G or slower. Connection is laggy

I trust you. It may depend on areas.
I have good experience even for long calls, but I mostly use it in the city(Washington DC Metropolitan Area).
As I mentioned earlier, this is NOT a replacement for daily primary mobile services, because we do need good/paid data plan to support daily life for emails, GPS, music, web search, news, etc... This FREE TextNow service just can't do it. But it has its own use cases: backup phone, kid phone, senior phone, etc... I have been using it for about 2 years, so far so good, can't complain much.

I'm interested in buying this purely for confirmation codes (bank or other institutions). On page 4, a user mentioned that you need to pay $6.50 per year in order to receive confirmation codes and another user posted that you could not use this to receive confirmation codes without paying more. Can anyone else confirm whether the $6.50 yearly charge would really allow you to receive confirmation codes from banks for example?

Also, if I go on a business trip abroad, based on other comments, I can just go on the web to keep the account active, but if I'm abroad, could I still receive confirmation codes?

Sorry if the questions seem simple, just want to make sure I understand everything before I sign up for their yearly service. Appreciate any help!
I have used it to receive confirmation codes from financial institutions over WiFi with no problems and have paid them nothing aside from the cost of the SIM. I have never received them over the cellular network, so can't comment on that.
TextNow's SIM can only be used in the USA, as far as I know. Canada may have been added, but haven't looked into it.
You are not signing up for a "yearly service" of any kind. The SIM works for an indefinite period. Perhaps they will change that in the future.
Check your phone's compatibility, install the app., try it on WiFi and then go ahead and make the major financial commitment of $0.99. I think you'll be happy you did.

I may order one to use with 4G phone. I'm worried this won't last long. All free things come to an end.

TN enables the user to make and receive voice calls, to send and receive txts all over WiFi. IF one buys and installs the SIM, one can then make and receive voice calls and send and receive txt. messages over the cellular network as well. Couldn't be simpler. Other than the fact that it does so via their app., it works just like any other cell service except for the absence of included "high speed data".

Curious when do they play ads? Not before receiving a call or making a call, I hope?
