There is an expiration date on the SIM card kit(about half a year to a year as I could recall), you will have to activate the SIM before that date, or the SIM will become void. Since it's free and unlimited monthly, so I don't think of a good reason to wait(but I could miss something).

Keep in mind that after you start using TextNow's phone number assigned to you, you will need to use it once a while(make calls or send/receive text message) or you will lose the number. You can request for a new number though, so if you don't care about the number much like I do(I mostly make outgoing calls as a backup phone), then you don't worry about losing the number due to inactivity.

Hope that helps.

From my experience, it looks to be VOIP number, like Google voice number.

That's why use Paypal checkout or Virtual Card with $1 limit

Great comments!! Thanks and repped!! And I put your comments into the Wiki page.

I just checked my existing TextNow account(from the TextNow app), I saw I am in the "Essential Data" plan, cool! Applause I got my SIM for $0.99 back in Jan 2022, and the free essential data plan started since Jan 2023(I saw this from the "Purcahse History" within the TextNow app).
Glad to hear you found out you got the "Essential Apps" data added to your TN account as a result of my comments.

An additional point that may be relevant for those wondering how they missed the no-cost SIM cards. I got the offer for a free TN SIM card in January 2022 because I had been using an old Sprint SIM card with TN since before COVID. TN probably offered such users with the no-cost replacement SIM cards. I recall receiving several TN messages that Sprint SIM cards would stop working at the end of March 2022.

4. Click next, then choose Message
5. Edit message (I just put "test") then add recipients.
Isn't that sending a message from the iPhone's "Message" app? I thought you had to send a message from the "TextNow" app to keep your number active?

TextNow has been pretty reliable as far as no extra fees or ToS changes, but they did ban one of my accounts for connecting once through a VPN. That is apparently a zero tolerance policy.
how do you use VPN with voiceline ?
My home VPN is built into my router - so if i use my phone that has textnow sim card and connect via wifi at home and uses vpn thats a violation ???

Does it matter? You can use it anywhere in the world as long as there's wifi.

Problem is that I am traveling tomorrow ... and won't be able to get delivery of package. So the sim kit will stay unopened for a while ...

I see, I don't think that's gonna be a problem, but it's better to ask their customer service.

I found that you can't send Chinese, Thai, Japanese or Hindi from Google Voice to TextNow. But it works the other way around. It's really weird. Looks like there's something missing between Google Voice and TextNow so unicode messages are not supported.

If you send it from the regular sms app to TextNow then it's fine.

You had me at free talk & text but lost me on it being ad supported.

I'd rather stick with my unlimited talk & text for $5/month on the Tmobile network, with a free sim that's shipped for free (or free eSim), that comes with free international calls to 60+ countries, and has no activation fees and no contracts. I'd rather pay that $5/month on my back-up phone, than be bothered with ads, or risk losing my phone number if I forget to use that back-up phone for a few weeks. $5/month is nothing to avoid those headaches, plus they give you the 2nd month free.

If they see your connection coming from a known VPN, it will likely trigger it.

I ordered one on Dec 2022 and have activate by date 10/13/2025 on it. I just activate it yesterday and still work.

Sorry, You're right. I guess he's using it that much.

"On that note, though, keep in mind that incoming calls and texts do not count towards keeping your TextNow number active. There must be an indication that the account is in use, so that's why an outgoing call or text is required." From TextNow
