I didn't say I bought 3 of these.

I was referring to buying 3 smartphones and not being able to buy more online.

Sheesh. What is your problem????

Do I have to actually activate this if I just want to use it like a tablet
You should activate it, you paid for the month of service already and then it can be unlocked after 180 days and used as an unlocked phone for many carriers.
You never know when you or someone you know needs a replacement phone short notice.

So basically buy it, activate for one month, cancel service immediately after activating then unlock after X days? I want to use this for USB OTG to send payloads to a modded switch so no cell service needed

you don't have to cancel service, Metro won't charge for second month unless you sign up for autopay, autopay is off by default.
So activate, it will stop service after 1st month, then you unlock after 180 days.

My 2022 version locked itself again after a software update. It was unlocked before that...
Don't believe it.

The wiki doesn't clearly cover this, but after activating the moto g, if I transfer the SIM or eSIM to a different device, would it mess with the unlock clock in any way.

Iirc, and if it still holds, you can't change devices without involving Metro customer service.

Unlock clock would not be affected as far as the original purchase goes. Once activated, the clock runs regardless.

In my case, I pulled the sim from my metro branded moto stylus 2021 and used the sim in another phone for a few months and let it expire. I forgot about the stylus, powered it on maybe a year later and got the message it was unlocked. Popped in a Mint sim and gave it to a senior friend and she loves it. YMMV.

Okay
Will it unlock automatically after 180 days or should we contact them?

I don't mean to sound mean, but there's a lot of people asking the same basic questions. It will save you a lot of time and effort if you take 5min to read the wiki pinned to the top.

Is it really that hard to read the wiki ? Every single question is answered there, its literally the first thing on the page.

Not yet. I am so disappointed about Metro customer service. The worst scenario is that UPS insurance company pay them for their "loss" and I have to pay $40 for the service I probably never activate. I literally paid nothing for the phone itself. These guys don't really care about my frustration.

On the contrary, I received a box with the SIM card only. The phone was missing. The box was in perfect condition with no sign of tempering. Checked UPS website for package information and noticed the registered weight is 0.4 LBS which means no phone was inside when UPS got it. Called Metro customer support 3 times plus one online chat. They told me they will file claim with UPS for the loss. WTF, they made the mistake obviously but want to blame UPS instead.
Any update?

why do you want to do that? you can't use another sim in this phone till it unlocks. So I don't see a reason to do so - unless you intend on paying and using Metro service and want to do it in another phone?
