Wife and I are losing access to our unlimited Google drive storage later this spring and have been looking for cloud storage to backup our data. pCloud gets some mixed reviews amongst datahoarders, some people have had their lifetime accounts disabled when they store copyrighted material on their drives, while others have had their accounts for years with zero issues. There are also slow upload speeds when using the backup feature on computer client, around 2-5MB/s, while uploading through their web client I was seeing 30-50MB/s speeds. Also some speculation on their lifetime model being sustainable, but they also do offer monthly or yearly plans. It's lifetime of the company kind of plan, not the lifetime of the customer.

With that out of the way, their 10TB plan is on sale for $890. The real list price is around $1300. They offered me a promotion where you buy 10TB plan, you get another 10TB plan for free, and that ended up costing us $1290.

This is a reputable enough company that's been in business since 2015, own all their servers in Luxembourg and Dallas. I'm hoping to get at least 4+ years of storage with them, ideally a lot longer, and the upfront cost will have been worth it.
Two 10TB plans (promo code emailed for the 2nd plan, will expire in 30 days if not claimed) - $1290 [pcloud.com]
One 10TB plan $890 [pcloud.com]

Seems to me like they could just encrypt everything by default like a real company and avoid the hassle and responsibility of having to involve themselves.
There are cons to that. Encrypted files has to be decrypted on the client side each and every time the file is accessed, which greatly reduce performance especially when watching video.
Encrypted files also cannot be shared.

"Lifetime" on any service is no good.
Once they got their money there's no incentive on keeping you..vs paying monthly or quarterly

Pcloud updates their mobile apps regularly. Not like some fly by night providers.
I have a voucher for 2tb lifetime account for $200.

I got from the B1G1 sale, so just splinting my cost.

I am one of the happy users that you mentioned before. I've been a lifetime pCloud user for 6 years now and I the cost upfront has definitely paid off! I've rarely, if ever, had speed problems. The trick is to never upload large amounts of data in many smaller folders. It doesn't do well with multithreaded transfers, but that's true for every storage provider. Files broken down into smaller chunks obviously take longer. Think in terms of computing. It has to create each folder and subfolder, and then start writing to their disk, most likely in 3 or 4 simultaneous transfers.

This should be a no-brainer but also make sure to choose the closest data region to your physical location to ensure max speeds.

As for the banning of accounts... it's funny how everybody talks about how they got their accounts cancelled, but never WHY they had them banned Smilie ... Just be mindful of the stuff you upload to pCloud and you'll be fine

pCloud hits the trifecta of bad things if you're considering a plan/company. First, your data is not encrypted, they can rifle through all your stuff at will and will use any opportunity to simply nuke your "lifetime" account and you'll be out all your money without recourse. Second, their software and/or infrastructure sucks, so your speeds uploading (and sometimes downloading) will be horrible. Third, and perhaps more importantly, there is serious doubt about the viability of their model, so you could put a lot of money into a "lifetime" plan only to get nothing after a year or two.

I wouldn't touch this with a 10 foot pole. Bad deal on a bad plan from a bad company.

if you upload even a single copyrighted or adult file, they'll nuke your "lifetime" account without warning and without the opportunity to correct the problem by deleting the offending material.
They only block an account if you are storing malware, terror-related videos or child pornography. They don't delete accounts, but suspend them and send an email to notify you about it. You can file a dispute up to 2 weeks after to try and get your account back. If they made a mistake and your files are legal, they'll give you your account back. This happened to me! They mistakenly saw a file of mine as going against ToS, so I contacted them and resolved it with the support team.

If a trillions dollar company like Google couldn't offer life time cloud storage, why does pCloud offer this?
A trillion dollar company like Google also has trillion dollar company expenses Smilie it doesn't matter how much money a firm makes, if they aren't able to turn a profit. There's a whole science to running a profitable business, but it mostly boils down to a cost-efficient organization strategy. Some firms have it and can offer lifetime subscriptions, others don't so they can't! Peace

I'd recommend Storj.io - Please look it up. You pay as you go, approx $4 per TB. Great for backups. However, please ensure you encrypt your data at your source before uploading to any cloud storage provider. That way there are no peeking eyes on your data, regardless on what you store.

Glad it worked out for you! I'm just reporting from the reviews I read about this service. I guess some other customers weren't so successful in getting their accounts back.

I've had for several years and would not recommend especially with the upload speeds. I have 1gb fiber symmetrical and speeds were atrocious and support was a Merry go round. Eventually they admitted there was an "issue" on their end but couldn't tell me an ETA of when it would be fixed. No issues with Dropbox, Google drive, OneDrive, or anything else.

I highly recommend folks review their subreddit as well for more horror stories.

You get what you pay for with pCloud. If you are accepting of that...then so far it's fine for what it does.

I primarily purchased as a cloud backup after crashplan changed their plans etc.

I personally trust my Synology more than pCloud.

Synology 1821+ 8 bays 850 on b&h when on sale. If you use their credit card, zero tax.

8x 20tb. Could be roughly $200 per drive on serverdeal (used enterprise drives). Some zipcodes have zero tax.

You can get up to 108tb of Synology with only double the price of this plan. (Shr2 - 2 drives parity)

If your internet speed is 1gbs, it would be even faster than OP.

Life time of the company and not your lifetime. Most people got it confused.
