I have my own opinion and it mirrors with the majority... It's a gimmick but that doesn't mean it doesn't do anything. To me it just doesn't do a good job creating any sort of 3D immersion for me. This is especially true if you have uneven ceilings. It might work decently if your ceilings are decent height and are even. However, even doing a on-wall Atmos setup is vastly superior.

Not the greatest deal. Rp-8000f are on sale for $349/each. If you really want Atmos on top (which is not ideal), you can get the 500sa pair for $279, for a total of $977.

Edit: didn't realize I was comparing gen 1 vs gen 2

I have the rp600m with the 500sa on top. Would have much preferred to go with the floors with atmos built in. Much cleaner look.

The top-firing Atmos speakers seems like a gimmick to me. How effective are they, actually, at creating sound that appears to be above you? I'd think I might rather just have a decent 5.1 system

They do work surprisingly well. I even have slanted ceilings above them and I'm sure they would sound much better if they were flat.

It's an alternative for people that can't/won't do overhead setup.
Placement is crucial for optimal performance, that's a challenge in an average home setup.

This is especially true with the built in model design.
That's why you are better off using 500SAs, it's more versatile and if it doesn't work well you can use them in a height setup.

Imo a common mistake especially on a tight budget.
People stretch their budget to include Atmos with these alternatives.
Unfortunately this sacrifices overall quality.

You are much better off building a good 5.1(2) setup then move up to Atmos after that. Especially since Atmos works in addition to the core system.
A good 5.1(2) can easily rival these Atmos alternatives when done properly.

Right now, I use mine in a 5.1 setup. I have the front firing speakers jumped to the up-firing speakers with a 6" cable, and it really increases the soundstage. Not in an Atmos kind of way, obviously, I just use it to broaden the soundstage a bit, vertically.

At this price, I don't think it's a mistake. You'd be hard pressed to find the RP8000F II at this price. It's possible, but I don't see it often. You could use the RP8060FAII as a less-expensive option for the RP8000F II. People say the sound is different, but is the difference worth the extra $500.00 to make sure youdon't have up-firing speakers?

Imo you're better off getting those RP8000f for $349 each and $279/pair for the 500SAs.
You would be hard pressed to hear a $300 sonic difference between them if at all.
I would gamble and say most wouldn't be able to pick out which is which.

If the 500SAs don't work well you have the option to use them in a height position, you do not have that option with these.
That's probably a better option anyways TBH.

BTW if you mean jumping the modules with the fronts, is running them on the same channel.
They are not designed for that and not a good idea imo.

But this is rp-8000 f II for 550 a piece with in built atmos. I'm split between old gen for 350 and new gen for 200 more

Look at it this way.
If you're just planning to use them without the modules like ImjustEric.
It will cost you an extra $300 just to say you have the newer gen.

If you plan to use them, you'll still be paying an extra $130 more and if they don't work like you thought, you're struck with them.
The 500s gives you the option to try them in a height position or sell them.

One thing these do have going for them is aesthetics.

How are u saying it will cost 130 more for using without modules ? The way I was looking was gen 1 8000s are 300 vs 750 for gen 2. So I'm getting gen 2 8000+ atmos for 550 instead of 750. What am I missing ?

Sorry for the confusion, looks like it's a $120 less.
Actually I said if you plan to use them.

These are $1099 with modules built in.
The 8000f are $349 each, $700 a pair + $279 a pair for the 500SAs = $980.

Sorry about that, was off by $10.

You are talking about the 8000f 1's. He's talking about the 8000f 2's.
