I love how you openly admit you have zero experience with these rice cookers but you still had to go out of your way to talk about how they are a gimmick.

But thank you for admitting you have no idea what you're talking about.

As someone who went from a basic rice cooker to a neuro fuzzy logic Zojirushi, I can tell you it completely changed the game for how we eat rice. Yes, it's perfect rice every time, but that's only part of the benefit. For me, it makes it so rice is always available at all times, so now it's a breakfast or lunch snack. It stays perfect for at least a good two days. Like it was just made 10 minutes ago. I have the NP-HCC10 which is almost the same rice cooker in a different form factor. This is the new design but is very similar in performance. You can save about $50 or so if you get a non- induction version, but I like the more uniform and energy efficient way that induction works over conduction.

I have a 40+ yo Taiwanese rice cooker that is so durable and I am still using it to make rice today thanks to my parenting giving them to me when I moved to college, don't know how much it was but certainly not THIS expensive. I get all the induction, and digital and what not gimmicks, but all I want is just perfectly cooked rice. I make rice all the time so I just want something that work and last for a long time, instead of filling up the landfills with modern garbage because of extreme capitalism

I grew up with a family size, our church still uses several extra large size, those normally white, one white push button that glows orange when pressed, rice cookers. They do well enough in my opinion. This truth may hurt. Only peeps that need perfect rice are those where it isn't a staple in their lives. Yes, perfect rice is great. But it is just traditional filler. It is the main course and sides that have been lovingly prepared that is the focus. I didn't grow up with anyone complaining about overcooked, or a bit soggy rice, except the host themselves. Undercooked, I admit is displeasing. Otherwise, the focus is on the main dishes, and hardly a peep about the rice condition. Whatever you get, hope it lasts years for you.

You drive a car to work? Fun fact, I save so much money not paying a car note, insurance, or gas. I walked to work. Thats what you seem like to people above your pay grade.
That's a bad analogy. Plenty of people I know walk to work because they live close by (downtown in a major city). Even right across the street. That is a way better life than owning a car and making a 30-60 minute commute each way. You end up paying more, though, for a better experience.

What's the value of a good rice cooker like this over the cheap one I've been using forever? I'd like to upgrade but what do I get out of it?
I wondered the same until I got the $150 Zojirushi off amazon thats always on sale.

We were using an instant pot to make our white rice and while it was pretty quick (20-25 minutes or so total time start to finish), and we thought it usually came out pretty good, it was also inconsistent at times and sometimes the rice would be a little mushy and such. We also started struggling with the instant pot recently where it would CONSTANTLY go into a "Burn" fail-safe and we couldnt figure out why and batches of rice kept getting ruined.

So we decided to try out that $150 Zojirushi off Amazon and have made rice a few times in it since getting it recently and it's unbelievable how amazing it is compared to the instant pot and very consistent each time we've made it so far. There's definitely a noticeable difference but I wouldnt be dropping $100+ on a rice cooker unless you actually cook rice fairly frequently (weekly) because its probably not really worth it otherwise. I couldnt justify dropping $260 on this zojirushi simply because i feel like i would have to make rice every day to make that worth it and we simply dont eat THAT much rice.

I bought a Zojirushi rice cooker in July. The thing started smoking (the smell of burnt plastic) and stopped working. These are supposed to be covered by a warranty which I submitted a few weeks ago, and I'm still waiting for a response. I'd be cautious spending this much on a small appliance (especially to cook rice -- come on, you can do this from your stove), because their warranties only last a year and they don't seem very responsive. Just my 2 cents, everyone else is going to have different priorities.

You're not considered an Asian unless you have either a zojirushi or tiger rice cooker in your house. Anything else, and you're a banana (inside joke)
I don't know if I'd limit it to just those but it's close 😂.
Growing up we had the giant one with flowers all over it and the external water catcher on the back that you had to empty every time. That rice cooker didn't break down even after daily use year after year. When it finally was replaced, it was simply because my parents wanted a new inner pot for it—not because it stopped working.

If you mean stays perfect on keep warm for days I agree, it does, but I thought I saw that you shouldn't hold it more than 15 or 18 hours or something due to bacteria? I know it keeps it heated but I swear I saw something that made me stop using past 15-18 hours. I can't find it again now.
yes. don't keep rice warm for more than few hours after cooking.
too much risk with bacterial growth.

it needs to keep it heated at a high temp to prevent growth, but then the rice gets dry and overcooked.

Save your money. Costco has the Tiger 5.5 cup Micom rice cooker on sale for $79.99. Made is Japan with a steamer tray. Free shipping too!

You're comparing a Corolla to a Lexus my man. That Tiger cooker at Costco does not have removable inner lid (deal breaker for me) and no IH.

Good question but it's like asking about the value of a $250 coffee grinder vs the $25 one, or the $500 coffee machine vs the $50 version. Balmuda toaster is another great example. Many argue it's overpriced (despite it being everywhere in Japan) but not everyone in the US is willing to pay for a $300 toaster. I find it to be great value since I use it every day and it turns sliced bread into delicious ones. It still bothers my how difficult it is to find a decent loaf of bread here in the US other than NYC, SF and LA or larger metro areas. You may get decent ones from 85C, Paris Baguette or Tous les Jours, but they're not even from the US.

It really depends on how picky you are about rice, how often do you cook/eat rice, and how much you are willing to spend. IH technology has been around for quite some and IMHO NW-QAC is decent a decent IH rice cooker. We cook rice almost daily and willing pay for premium taste. To me a good rice cooker means you can use non-Japanese rice and still get quality rice. I spent about 60k yen on a NW-PU, hauled it all the way back from Japan, and paired it with a 120-100 voltage converter. It has 4 IH coils, a step below the 6 IH coiled NW-FA , (which you can get it here online for ~$850). To many that is way too much for a rice cooker, but to me it's 200% worth it, because I eat rice every day and I think it's a fantastic investment and improves the quality of almost every meal I cook..

Yours is not made in Japan. The one here is newer and made in Japan.

I own a rice cooker, and I'm not a "rice guy," but you're spreading misinformation. What stirring? Making rice traditionally does not require any checking. You leave the pot alone, just like with a rice cooker. It doesn't stick, even in stainless steel. The only difference is you have to soak the rice yourself instead of letting the cooker do it for you. Same or better result as a cooker, one extra step hands on time.

Dummy proof is the right phrase.
Lol rice doesn't stick? You're never suppose to stir? You're the one spreading misinformation my friend.
