If they are interested in learning how to play the game, definitely gran the Battle Academy from somewhere. Target [target.com], GameStop [gamestop.com] and PokemonCenter [pokemoncenter.com]all have them and this is a great way to get three complete decks with rules and damage counters. Target has it for $15 currently and it won't go much lower than that.
Other than that, purchasing ETBs (Elite Trainer Boxes [pokemoncenter.com]) are usually good buys and if you can grab some on sale they are typically worth it!
If there are specific cards they are interested then tcgplayer.com [tcgplayer.com] is a great place to shop for specific one off cards; just pay attention to the sellers and their shipping fees.
The newest set of cards is Paldean Fates, but Temporal Forces is the next set coming out March 17 for pre-release items. Paldean Fates has shiny pokemon cards which is a gimmick, but kids seem to really like getting them. Enjoy Pokemon tcg!

I got 1 lost origin pack in mine. Was surprised because even the employee at GameStop said lost origin packs weren't in these.

I ordered online. Employee said they still had them at $40 in store. Game stop online and B&Ms run separate from each other most of the time

I'm a Gamestop Pro member. I walked into the store and the associate rang this up as $19.99. I didn't have to prompt him or ask for a price match against their online price. I used my $5 monthly to bring this to $14.99. Pro members get 5% savings, bringing price down to $14.24.
Picked up a couple. It is 2 OF, 2 PE, 1 SV01, 1 LO
