2017 was 7 years ago, not 8
Intel was introducing new 8th gen CPUs as late as Q3 2019
Scratches will be minor in B grade laptops, and close to nonexistent in A grade
Battery will be replaced if it's under 80% capacity
A used latitude in good shape will likely outlast a new Inspiron, and $399 is more than double the price of this deal.
You can return these on Dell Refurbished's dime if there is anything wrong (such as loose hinges).
I bought one of these in Sept 2023; at this price I enjoy replacing them every 2-3 years. I think this is my third or fourth used Latitude laptop. They're still useful to those I give them away to.

It's on my desk now, driving two 32" 4K monitors from the HDMI sand USB-C ports, plus the 14" screen, running 50 edge tabs, notes, outlook, chrome, and teams. I'm managing Azure & M365 resources, coding in PS via the portal. it's durable, well-supported, easy to buy parts for (I put in a 2TB drive for my photography, for which I run PS and LR Classic).

In short, a perfectly fine laptop for those who don't game.
These are great for some special use cases where you wouldn't want to spend big $$ on new hardware with the latest and most powerful processors. Case in point - I bought one of the 7400s a few weeks ago for $190 during their last sale. I got it specifically to use with the Forscan ODB II software for reading codes and tweaking options on my Ford truck. Add a $40 ODB II USB interface and I have a great fully-functional bi-directional scan tool for use with my vehicles for under $250.

A semi-pro purpose-built scan tool with same same capabilities would have run me at least $500 or more (and they typically are custom android tablets). As a bonus, this is a Windows 11 laptop that can serve other purposes.

7400 deal seems dead.. no laptops fit this category when the link is clicked. Oh well.. there is the 7410 discount that shows up... thinking of pulling the trigger on this:

Dell Latitude 7410 Notebook,
14-in FHD Touch (1920 x 1080),
Intel Core i7 Quad (i7-10610U) 1.80 GHz,
16 GB RAM,
512 GB SSD

$318 shipped/taxes....

Same here... not sure it is as good either.. but those deals are done with so curious if this is still a good deal or not. Seems not too bad for a cheap laptop for music work..

That power button placement on 7410 bothers me more than it should

Some of the earlier posts have said the 7410 was an upgraded 7400. I was eyeing that particular model also.

The one I got last year on a deal like this looked brand new. I have been recommending these to folks at a nearby assisted living place who want something to stay in touch with the world.

Intel 8th generation processors came out 8 years ago (2017).
We're now at the 14th generation of Intel processors.

These heavily used, but cleaned, scratched, battery-worn, old laptops have been used within a company (or two) by multiple people for the past 5-7 years?
Perhaps after three years when they were completely written off for tax purposes they were repurchased in bulk by another company for pennies on the dollar. Now they're being cleaned and re-sold yet again.

Several recent $399 Dell laptop deals for new, and latest gen, processors have been posted in SD recently. You're guaranteed a lengthy product life with the latest tech including modern security features.

How is it that FedEx Recycling continues to have 6th, 7th and 8th generation Intel-based products still in inventory being resold?
I'll guess that they have a warehouse containing several thousand older computer units but they're only able to clean and test 50-100 units each week. Therefore, these units may have been stored for 1-3 years and not used daily for the past 5-8 years.
Typically off lease equipment .. not product stored for too many years as the value of used computers decay quickly.

If you have a Dell service tag you can often lookup the fates associated with the pc you got.

We only hear from those that got newish laptops a year or two ago, who've become big promoters in these threads. Your reality feedback is appreciated.

Any bad product shipments that are able to be returned go right back into the re-sale inventory float for the next unsuspecting buyers. That next buyer will be the third (or fourth) user. That's how these old processor laptop keep remaining in the FedEx Recycling inventory perhaps.

My experience was similar to yours but I didn't get the support that you received. FedEx Recycling wasn't willing to do any returns on the following flaws, since they didn't see anything as officially "broken" under their T&Cs:

- battery was 75% using my testing, wouldn't replace, battery drops rapidly after 40%
- scratches and missing paint on both of my "Grade A" laptop purchases, FedEx said these were surface appearance issues and it still qualifies at a "Grade A" from their definition, wouldn't replace
- occasional screen flickering on one, FedEx Recycling merely suggested it was a driver issue

I purchased two. I'm sure there are many "silent" buyers with similar experiences who we're not hearing from. If I received even one new-like good performing laptop, I might also have become a promoter of these used older laptops.

I'm happy for those that have done well in past years with the product they received. For me, and many others, it hasn't been a very good experience. No purchasor knows what they're going to receive. I've not found FedEx Recycling to be as helpful and accommodating as some have suggested. We're dealing with a "refurbisher" who's interested in getting rid of this old inventory. They don't really want them back, unless forced. I should have gone through my credit card company to push for a chargeback.

Highly YMMV.
Thanks ..

From my POV laptops used as laptops will be beat up to some degree .. those which stayed on desks and locked in desks after hours should be in good condition.

Having worked with Dell and hp laptops in large businesses .. a lot depends on the individual users.. thus I feel people need to be prepared to return if they get one that is too beat up.

Bought a Precision workstation category 17" laptop last Nov for $210. It's a desktop replacement for me. Built like a tank. 32M memory 512GSSD and 8 core i7. The battery wasn't the best. Based on the feedback on this forum, I called the support and they sent me a better one. Can't complain.

Battery isn't always replaced if it's under 80% capacity. You need to run a battery report to check that, when you get the machine.
I just purchased a refurbished about 5 weeks ago and battery was under 80%. Then they sent me a 48wHr battery as a replacement, instead of a 68 wHr (not sure if the 48 wHr was compatible or not, but I wanted the bigger battery that came with the computer). It took them about a week to send the 1st replacement battery, then another 10 days to send the 2nd.

Meanwhile, the warranty is ticking away, and you can't use the computer (I didn't want to put personal stuff on the hard drive if I ended up disputing the purchase with Dell refurbished if they didn't honor their warranty terms - I had also purchased the warranty extension to 1 year).

The computer bought off the dellrefurbished site had a label on it saying "Refurbished to Dell specifications by Fedex Supply chain" - Dell isn't even refurbishing these computers themselves.

All in all, I'm not terribly confident about this purchase ... only time will tell.

100% concur, always do a fresh install. Wiping a NVME drive is instant though you can do it from the BIOS in a few seconds. No need to waste write cycles hammering it.

I've imaged dozens of these 7400s at work the last few months and they are a bargain at <200 bucks. They still have hundreds in use at my work as the refresh cycle is pretty long here.
Why wouldn't this be the first thing the refurbishers would do? If you wipe the drive, do you then have to spend lots of time reinstalling drivers, etc.?

The dell website can do all that automatically after you reinstall windows.
