Feb 2024, Wyze camera breach allowed customers to look at other people's camera feeds

https://www.usatoday.com/story/te...669518007/

===========================

For people don't want to pay for any plan and don't want to setup any server while want to connect to Alexa to trigger Alexa routine, seems like TP-Link Kasa has some pretty nice free feature. Like Kasa camera can do motion trigger for Alexa routine and separately can do person motion trigger for Alexa routine. And you can set separate detection zone for motion detection and person detection. So you can setup person detection for the whole camera view (to trigger certain routines) and motion detection (like just close by your home) to avoid too many motion detection notification(and can trigger different set of Alexa routines). And you don't have to sign up for any plan to use those features.

While for Wyze Cam v3, without paying for any plan, it can't be use to trigger routine for Alexa. And only can do motion detection notification (not trigger) without any plan.

Note, looks like all TP-Link Tapo camera support RTSP https://www.tp-link.com/lk/support/faq/2680/

Currently Amazon has TP-Link Tapo 2K Pan/Tilt Security Camera for Baby Monitor, Dog Camera w/ Motion Detection and Tracking, 2-Way Audio, Night Vision, Works w/ Alexa & Google Home (Tapo C210) for $23.99 (for 1 not 2 Tapo)

- Fully compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, use your simple voice command to view Tapo indoor security camera live stream on Echo Show or Google Chrome Cast with a screen.
- can also motion trigger things (like trigger Alexa routines to turn on smart device or smart switch(with light connect to it), etc) without any paid plan. Even if you are not home, you can have the motion trigger to turn on your living room light (and/or turn on loud music in bedroom for xxx mins, etc) when someone walking around your driveway so people may think you are home.

Amazon also has TP-Link Tapo Pan/Tilt Security Camera for Baby Monitor, Pet Camera w/ Motion Detection, 1080P, 2-Way Audio, Night Vision, Works with Alexa & Google Home (Tapo C200) for $19.99

Nice price on a V3 which is the best/last camera to be eligible for free CamPlus Lite (free video clip cloud storage).
(12 second clip, 5 minutes cool down, 2 week rolling cloud storage https://www.wyze.com/pages/cam-plus-lite)

That said, they recently had another significant security blunder where video clips and thumbnails were briefly visible to other/wrong users.
https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/1...ers-events
(When I say another, I refer to the unpatch V1 vulnerability that went on for years without acknowledgement nor solution)

I like wyze for being cheap and meeting my needs, but I don't fully trust the company/their security. Personally all these cheapy/cloud connected cameras are outdoor/non-private location use only.
It's been a few years but I don't remember any of my V2's coming with an SD card.
I've bought several v2 camera's and none of them ever came with an sd card.

Been this price fairly consistently for the past 3 or 4 weeks, but keeps going in and out of stock and the expected ship times fluctuate wildly by day anywhere from mid March to late April. I have ordered a few individual cameras here and there as they are in stock and the ship dates always end up becoming much sooner than originally listed, so don't let that deter you.

Keep in mind that the V3 doesn't come with an SD card like the old V2 cam packages did.

I have tried various indoor camera like Kasa, Eufy, Wyze in last few years. Seems like if don't want to pay for any plan and don't want to setup any server while want to connect to Alexa to trigger Alexa routine, seems like Kasa has the best free feature. Like Kasa camera can do motion trigger for Alexa routine and separately can do person motion trigger for Alexa routine. And you don't have to sign up for any plan to use those features.

While for Wyze Cam v3, without paying for any plan, it can't be use to trigger routine for Alexa. And only can do motion detection notification (not trigger) without any plan.

If I just need a basic indoor camera to monitor my pets while I'm away, what do you suggest? Don't need anything fancy or expensive for security type uses.

You need to do some research and figure out which features you need. Is the area you monitor big enough that you need the pan & Tilt camera that follow your pets around?

Do you need integration to Alexa/google Assistant, Apple Home Kit, etc so you can set up routine that can trigger your smart device(including smart plug, etc) or use (something like voice command) Alexa/Google Assistant to trigger some of the features of the camera? And using those to trigger things like audio alert to your Alexa/Google devices when motion detected?

If you don't need any features and you just want to view the camera (at set position) on your cellphone at the time you want, then any indoor camera can do that. But Wyze camera recently just has a security breach which allowed 13000 customers to peek into other's home. And Eufy(Anker) has similar security issue before.

At this price, you won't find a better camera for what you need. Give it a try and see how you like using it.

I think that was a limited time package deal. Home Depot had special blister packs around Christmas one year. Other retailers may have as well.

I'm not sure where you guys bought yours from or what the packaging setup was, but I bought 8 V2's from Home Depot about 3 years ago when they were on clearance for just under $10 each and they included a 32 GB Wyze SD card in each package. I'm just putting out the warning about the lack of an SD card because I think a lot of people on here probably got on the Wyze bandwagon through that Home Depot deal and might just assume they all came with SD cards, and it might also help anyone who isn't already familiar with cameras to be aware that there is a general need for them to have local storage and that they should factor that additional purchase into their total up-front cost calculation.

For reference, this was the old thread on here where the 32-GB SD card included V2 deal was posted that initially got me into the Wyze cams:

The issue with Wyze is this is not even the first time they have security breach issue.

I remember few years back, Wyze breach has leaked million of their customers information to the public. So it is not ONLY their security camera issue but Wyze has server security issue and customer database security issue, etc.
