These sound amazing...but 20g sugar? That's practically a candy bar... But its still a good deal, and it does give me some ideas for making my own with higher protein.

No, it's not. A Candy bar is a candy bar. This doesn't have junk ingredients, has fiber and the sugar is coming from dates and the pineapple. I'd rather satisfy my sugar craving from a nutrient dense Date as opposed to a spoonful of sugar.

It's marginally better, sugar is sugar is sugar, gram for gram, it doesn't matter what it comes from, the small amount of fiber is the only beneficial thing in it, as it offsets the sugar a little, but there's not enough to do much.

This is a step above a candy bar, but it's still terrible macros for the calorie/sugar content/size, it's easy to do better.

I'm not saying people shouldn't eat them either, if you want a treat I'd say go for it, they aren't terrible, but they aren't super healthy either, just don't overdo it and you'll be fine.

I agree with all of this but this is not the same as a candy bar. I'd choose a Larabar over an ultra processed candy bar any day. That's not even a contest.

As a nutritionist, I'm telling you, the margins are slim, these are definitely better, but better doesn't mean good for you, how much something is processed doesn't matter with the exception of complex carbs, and larabars are about as processed as a candy bar, it may only have 3 ingredients, but they're also heavily processed... To be clear though, that's not a bad thing, and if you're otherwise healthy having one occasionally wont harm you in the slightest, but the same can be said for a candy bar... The only thing these bars have that is significantly better than the average candy bar, is they are much lower in saturated fat, so yes, it's good you'd rather have this over a normal candy bar, but i just don't want people falling into the trap of thinking they're healthy.

Every day I see people who hear something is healthier than "XYZ" so they eat too much of the "healthier" alternative, not realizing that it can be just as bad because they are overdoing it thinking it's ok, where as people are more likely to self regulate their intake with candy bars.

So TLDR, totally eat them, eat whatever you want within reason, just saying it's best to treat them as a candy bar, and only have them in moderation Smilie

Unless they are lying:
"....minimally processed, and as close to their natural state as possible."

https://www.larabar.com/our-produ...20possible.

So, your claim that these are as processed as a candy bar isn't true. I again agree with everything else you said though.

They are, it's a marketing gimmick playing on people's fears. It is one of the primary misconceptions about foods I have to deal with on a daily basis, processed doesn't mean something is bad, many foods are better for you if processed more, with the exception of grains which are best for you as whole grain...

The main things you have to look out for in ANY food, and this can be a problem both in foods considered more processed and minimally processed foods alike, are things like high sodium, high saturated fats, and high sugars/carbs... They're all fine in moderation of course, but foods that contain high percentages of them, should be eaten in moderation even for an otherwise healthy person, and very limited in those with FLD/diabetes etc.
