My promedia 2.1 thx I bought 10 years ago are still working but I've been wanting to try bookshelf speaker for the pc. Would these be over kill for pc?

Might be little much nearfield. Also still need a sub. IMO

I think people usually buy powered monitor speakers for their PCs, like in a home studio. The rest use headphones to keep the noise down.

Probably. I don't use mine for my PC because they're rear port speakers and too close to the wall on my desk.
