Only good for hot grilling like burgers, hot dogs and steaks. This is not for anything that requires a cook time greater than 10 minutes. It's really good for steak as it gets nice and hot. But for that you can just grill on a chimney starter.

Solo fire pits/stoves are awesome and are expensive for a good reason. This BBQ is not awesome or worth 50 bucks.
Just take a Weber chimney starter and slap a griddle on top? lol. Never thought of that. Now that IS a cheap and portable tiny charcoal grill. Sorry grass.

Exactly. It's like grilling on a jet engine. Alton Brown did on Good Eats. I cook my skirt steak that way and comes out perfect every time.

So, is this a good grill.
Nope. That's why its discontinued. You can't control the burn rate, fire height or grill temps. Get this grill if you want to start a fire and be trendy, not if you want to eat.

So we've established it's not a good grill. How is it as a fire pit? It seems pretty comparable to the Solo Bonfire [solostove.com] in size (slightly wider, but shorter). The basic bundle is $90 less than the Bonfire. Is it a good alternative just to use as a fire pit?

for use a a firepit I don't see why not but keep in mind this don't have holes on the top like their firepits to give it the secondary burn that make the pit "smokeless" and burn everything nice and hot.

this will work as a fire pit but will work like a "normal" firepit.

I was kind of excited to see this as a cheap option for a Solo Stove for someone who might want something "bonfire" sized, but from the pictures, it doesn't look like it functions the same. Can't find a good 360 view, but looks like it might not be a smokeless design (no holes that I can see inside the stove near the top).

I might try it sometime. Frankly, I rarely have the patience for normal charcoal stuff unless I'm smoking something in an Akorn. Normally I just use a small gas grill with a smoker box, that's when I've mostly used the chimney.

How in the world is the retail for this thing $599?
I bought my Akorn at a clearance sale at Walmart for $79 and it looks a lot more substantial than this.

Weber's Smokey Joe is a fraction of the cost with a more functional design. The girls won't be too impressed if they're into shiny metal.

The Smokey Joe is the one Weber kettle I've owned that I've been disappointed in. The lack of air flow on the bottom makes it a pain to use. I do love the big Weber Gold kettles though and feel like they are the best grills on the planet

I like my standard solo stove. I had a griddle from an old grill that I just pop on to make food. It is a pain in the butt to clean though.
