Walmart has had some decent deals lately. I agree that the 33's are not what they used to be. As a dad of three boys I am somewhat of a connoisseur of cheaper poles and have had good luck with Abu Garcia combos.

I've started doing this to my Zebco 33 reels: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIxcRT3O6oE
Makes a nice smooth difference, and for the money I don't think you can beat a 33. I have also bought the Dock Demon set, taken that cheap reel off, and put a 33 on to make a really good kayak or small boat rig.

I was a fan of them, they are hard to break the rod, but eyes can break. The thing that they have against them is their flexibility. If you get the same medium, or light rated rod in the same length, with same reel.... The other rod will always cast further than the the ugly. When you set the hook, the flexibility of the rod takes some of the power out of the hookset. When you are fighting a fish, the flex also works against you when you pull up the rod to pull in.
They are good for beginners that bang rods under trees, in car doors, drop on docks, but.... they do have inherit negatives. I give mine to any new fisherman, or kid that comes to our lake, they don't know the difference and I don't care if they damage the equipment.
I have a disabled angler in the family. Push button rods are all she can use.
We have tried almost every Zebco reel through the years. What I learned, is don't get the cheapest one. If you spend another $20 on the reel, it works so much better. If you buy a combo rod and reel, the reel is always made for the price point. There are fewer ball bearings, or the crank ration is lower.
Buy a cheap rod, and a decent reel. Don't get the cheapest reel, get a model or two higher. The more you spend, the further it will cast, the more line it takes in.
On the other extreme from cheap reels, I found the Zebco Bullet on sale a few years ago, and it is an amazing ($100+) Reel. It cast almost as far as my baitcasters, it has a buttery smooth retrieve. The Omega line ($55+) is a close second. They are pricey, but had zero issues with them.
Do you need to spend that much? No - but if you are fishing a couple times every year, you will notice the difference. Get something in the $30 price range and it will be so much nicer than the entry level gear.
