I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

With amazon business account, there is an additional $31 promotional certificate that can be clipped which brings the original $82.90 down by extra $31 and total price comes to about $51.90

Same, business deal may be dead.
Are you talking about the $82.90 price or the $31 coupon? I can still see and use the coupon in the cart but the low base price was already raised to $107.90 after someone else posted the business deal they got. Business price with coupon is just a couple bucks cheaper now than the one in the OP.

Their own website has it with a free case at the same price $78.90 and no tax and free shipping.
The free case shows up after you add it to cart.

Just wondering, if on your cruise you use the "Clone MAC Address" way to connect to the cruise wifi, can you then use your phone AND your GL router while on the cruise, albeit maybe not at the same time?
When you clone your phone mac to the router, the cruise only sees the router. You can use both at same time.

Your phone connects to the router as well as any other devices you want to connect to the router. The cruise only sees the router mac address. The router take care of the fact that your phone has the same MAC address. Cruise is none the wiser

I'm just curious (and I am a very normal non tech person who knows less than 10% of all this technical stuff)...

If the hotel already offers free wifi, why does someone like me need this unit?

I've used this in hotels with a splash page as well on a United WiFi flight. Just open the GLI app and connect to it with your device. Follow the steps to connect as a repeater (use cases above) and then it will pass through to the WiFi login page.

It was very easy but I work in IT and understand the different options more than the common person.
I'm not sure I understand the value of this product as a vpn serves a similar function except with this device your throughput will be limited by the hotel by MAC address. Meaning, youve now introduced a bottleneck that wasn't there because all traffic is now funneling through this devices mac. The only real use case I can think of that I cannot presently replicate with anoth device would be Airplay and Chromecast...

Or does this device spoof rotate MAC making throttling difficult?

I read a lot of the reviews on Amazon. There is a significant fraction of people who had issues with the unit. My personal experience was one of those. I was of the same attitude of yours. After I updated firmware and read the documentation, mine was unstable. no matter what I tried it was unstable. This is coming from someone who owned the Mango, the slate and had no issues.

So even if I returned it for warranty or RMA, I would still pay for shipping if I got it directly from GLinet, whereas Amazon I would get a free return and get another one.
so did you get a replacement and found out the first one was a dud? or the entire product line is affected?

there definitely reasons why people buy from amazon. and there definitely has some issues with the QC of this product. but even with that said. the negative review from amazon (1 and 2 stars) is only about 10% (we can assume that one is much likely to leave a negative review than a positive one)

you don't.

there are two primary uses cases, and both relate to travel
1. you pay per connection. even if hotel has free wifi the premium ones aren't often free and require you to pay. with this, you can share that premium connection to multiple devices. this is pretty standard practice in airplane/cruise/hotels.

2. VPN gateway. if you want to funnel all your content over VPN to bypass some local internet issues (like netflex for example), you need your tv stick or chromecast to go over VPN, and you cannot just load wireguard or openvpn on those tv boxes. this is what you do.

Yeah these are the two use cases I can think of with a couple of caveats.
1. Rarely have I seen a hotel lock a premium connection by device, it's almost always done by room number login meaning all devices that use the premium login are on the premium connection.
2. You can get around the chromecast/airplay limitations with your cellphones hotspot with VPN or use a device that allows your preferred vpn install or side load. This is a tech geek device and seems completely unnecessary if you have those skills 🤷 ♂️

Correct me if I'm wrong

1. I am currently at a hotel where they only allow 2 devices per room/reservation, and charge extra for more, so this little router helped there
2. This then requires that specific device to be at the hotel/around the entire time, with hotspot running (killing battery/heat) and coverage is worse
