I own the standard, non-AX version and have used it extensively in my travels domestically and globally. There's a walkthrough published by gli on this exact topic here: https://docs.gl-inet.com/router/e...ve_portal/

This is also great for cruises where they base your cost on per device. Hook this up first and tie to your account and then connect all your devices to the gl to save. Granted this only works when in your room, but definitely helps for those cruise line that charge per device.

Yes. It absolutely could and can work as a home router - especially for a small home or apartment. The same company sells several full-size regular "home" routers which are more powerful however on VPN speeds etc if you would prefer that. But there's no reason it couldn't be your home router as well, despite the "travel" monikers.
I am using Google nest router and I don't think It has the VPN and adguard functionality built in. Do you think I think I should replace it? If I replace what you would recommend?

I use the gl.inet AX1800 and I have purchased the new MT-6000 though I haven't had time to set it up and test yet. Both of them have VPNs and AdGuard built right in.

I just used a battery pack connected to the router and brought it to dinner or lounging at the pool. Had my phone connected and kids ipads , switched and other devices connected .

Can this be a tailscale end point?
Yes. The stock firmware includes Tailscale for easy config through the GL.iNet gui.

You can also install a clean OpenWRT build and do all sorts of fun things.

Yep - works great as a small home / apartment router.
Look elsewhere if you need a mesh wifi setup for a large estate.

What are the OpenWRT features that you use that is lacking in the stock build? Thanks for the comment on tailscale.

Also can I manage it with my iPad when on the road. I don't want to lug an laptop around.

folks, it's a mistake getting this given the alternative. although a good device (all their routers are ; ) you're slicker getting the newer Brume 2, which is cheaper, much smaller, better, and serves all use cases asked here

i have accumulated ten gl.inet devices to date -- mini, travel, enterprise routers 4g/lte. this one is fine but inferior to the Brume 2... get that one isnstead

GL.iNet Brume 2 [gl-inet.com] (also on sale and available in aluminium alloy)

All use cases except for that the Brume 2 doesn't have wireless. That's a big issue if you need a wireless router.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Brume 2 isn't a wifi router - its a wired gateway. Totally different animal.

I just received mine this weekend and tested it with my Tmobile Inseego 5G mifi which is my main internet connection. For some reasons, I could not get the WAN port working (even used as LAN port) with my mifi. The router randomly detects the connection then disconnects repeatedly and never became stable. I tried connecting it to the 2nd LAN port and the connection is stable. Tethering (via USB) and repeater work fine and I realized using tethering also charges my mifi so that's my current setup now (not needing to permanently plug the mifi to another power source). Now I'm thinking if I received a lemon because of the WAN issue and contemplating if I should get a replacement.

Hmm - that's disappointing as I'm on the fence as to whether to buy this vs a slate AX or plus. I thought there was an EAP issue with the Beryl that was fixed with the latest firmware update, but maybe that's incorrect. I had also read you could log in with your phone and then copy the MAC address to the router. Your input made this a tougher decision for me lol! But thx for sharing.

if his ipad can get past the captive portal.. once you do that clone the ipads mac very simple fix...

There's no EAP support in the latest non-beta stock firmware. The Official OpenWRT build for the Beryl AX has EAP support. It's not that hard to work around though. You log into the WiFi with your phone or laptop and then clone the MAC address (of your phone or laptop that you logged into the WiFi with) to the Beryl AX and reboot it.

Supposedly an upcoming official non-beta GL.iNet firmware will add EAP support also.

I am currently on anthem of the Seas and can confirm(when it works) that this works fine
This is my first cruise with this or any wifi travel router.i telework on cruises some so i need at least 2 connections or deal with nothing for my phone when I'm working. The issue in dealing with is disconnects from this wifi router. Still debugging it, but i am starting to notice the light on this router going from solid to blinking and my phone disconnected and this ssid is not available until the light is solid again. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm worried the cruise line is figuring out ways to stop this. Or the router or usb cord could have an issue.
