I would be shocked to see a Sony device fail because it ran on a simulated sine wave or to have a warranty denied because of it, unless they specifically state not to use one.

Not sure whether to try to replace the battery (still has stock battery from 2016) or this issue means I need to replace the whole device.
On another note, is the UPS in this deal sold in Costco warehouses or online only?

Every time I've looked into replacing a battery in a UPS, the replacement cost + shipping has been almost the same as a new unit. You might save like $20 but have to wait a week and still have your same old unit (which might need more than just a battery). The batteries also seem to be non-returnable a lot of the time.
Id say if you have a battery store nearby that might have a replacement battery (and you can test it), maybe go for that (assuming the price is better than the manufacturer), otherwise I'd just go for a new unit. These $100-125 units sometimes seem to be even cheaper than the replacement battery.
