I do home repairs as a business and I own this, it's a good tool.
You can't sharpen carbide blades, there's not enough blade and they're not designed to slide out to compensate for the blade becoming shorter due to sharpening. There's a groove in the middle of the blade and it's fixed in position. They are double sided, so when one side gets dull, you can flip it over and use the other side. After that you just buy a new set and replace. They are extremely sharp and cut like butter. Also, because they're so hard, they stay sharp a long time. If you work with clean wood, one set will last you a while. But because they're so hard, they are also very brittle, so doing things like shaving subfloor seams is pretty sketchy. You can go through and make sure you sink every nail before shaving, but eventually you will nick one and that's $20 down the drain.
mainly use it to trim down doors that aren't closing properly due to foundation shifting. Ive used it to shave bottoms of doors if someone got thicker floors that werent clearing. sure there are a lot if other uses, but I like this, lightweight and gets the job done

What do you use it for? Like what application or repair?

Can I set this to only take off a very thin layer, such as removing varnish along flat surfaces?

never used a planer before, but is it safe to say this wouldn't be good for 2x4's since the max width is 3.25"?

Thanks OP

Rebuilding my deck this summer.
This should help with the "quality" lumber that's available today

Would be rare that you'd be planning the wide part of a 2x4
usually it would be the edge- think bow on a stud

Good point. I am planning to do the same this spring/summer, going with composite decking. May need this tool to align new beams and joists as well.

Thanks OP, repped.

Lol just saw this thread and thought of the last planer deal. Thank you kindly for remembering my comment. I guess it's a sign that I need to get this

Can you do top or side of door, depending on where it's grinding?

yes, can't remember how thin but it is like 1/64 of an inch I think, completely adjustable. seriously if you need it a couple times it is far worth it at this price. Ive sanded the edge of a door with a sander, took forever and looked like shite, this takes like 20 seconds
