do you know if these phones are locked to att?
You are buying an unlocked phone, so think about it.

I just picked up the phone and tried to cancel service. They said I need to activate the phone before they can cancel service. Is this correct? I tried giving them my name and the google voice number I created during the checkout.

Are you sure it's a soft check. Those warnings usually precede hard checks.

So were you able to get one?
Yes but I did have to sign an agreement electronically that I haven't read yet and am still waiting for a copy.

If you insert the AT&T sim in the phone, does it lock the phone to AT&T? I was planning to use the service for a couple of daya before asking them to cancel.
No, the phone is already unlocked.

Yes, they do want to "explore" all ways to keep the line.

I just picked up my phone. I can also log into my AT&T account.
However I have not been asked about number porting or the PIN by AT&T. They just asked for Account number while ordering last night.
The number is still with Google Voice - I just checked. I paid $3 to unlock it last night and there is no option to unlock it now. But it works at Google Voice, so it's not moved to AT&T apparently.

How does the AT&T port start? I guess I cannot cancel the line unless the number is ported to AT&T. And this will take more than 3 days - because then I will have to pay $35 activation. Should have done a new number in store. What a mess..

They asked for my name and phone number. The only phone number I used was the google voice number. When they sent a text with the code I never received the code. They then said I need to activate the phone.

I now see the subtle perk of porting means you don't have the leave the house. But I still have not seen a definitive answer to the activation fee.

pick up in store to avoid activation fee.
if you want to do the deal online you can get a Google voice/tello number and port it over. otherwise you can get a new number in store

Man that sucks, so did they already create an account for you, I have an appointment in a few hours hopefully they've recovered by then.
