OP - thanks for the post. I decided to buy this phone in store.

I did not port in a number, so I got a new number. The phone was free, but the sim was $8. Did anyone get charged for a sim?

Agent was nice, but because the sim was separate he had to charge for it. If I didn't get the sim the phone would cost $ (don't remember the exact $).

You should not be charged for a SIMn for getting it with ATT

Thanks. So I guess I can/should cancel with AT&T when the phone is shipped, right? I already set up an account and see my (yet to be ported) GV number there.

I attached free AARP number (thanks Swag****) to my AT&T account in case they decide that I didn't cancel within 3 days and charge me the activation fee)

Yes it should cancel the account but you will need to verify that it's actually closed from them.

Nope, the bill might come with a month worth of charge and activation fee. No phone charge. And those fees can be voided.
