Used Advantix, Frontline Plus, then Prevecta, then this for the last few years on two dogs and cat and it's worked the best for us. Says it'll last 6 weeks but safe to reapply after 4, we stick with 4.
I feel that it can be trial and error. Frontline Plus doesn't work for a fellow family member's dog, but the 6 month stuff does (Bravecto).
Usually pay $40 for 6 doses from Walmart. Getting 12 for less than $20 more is a no-brainer for me. Thanks OP
appreciate the reply! I guess I'll grab a small 6 pack, (MN so during the winters we are okay to skip)
Depending on which one, but Sam's about same price. For the medium dog, it is $5 at both places. When on sale, it will be cheaper at Sam's. Also, Frontline is on sale at Costco. In store cheaper than online.
I assume this is for cats that go outside. I've never had issues with the cats who stay inside except for the one time a relatives dog came to visit and had fleas and soon the entire house and the cat was full of them.
I now have a dog that goes outside and we treat him. The cats, we haven't worried about treating.
This works fine until it doesn't, caveat emptor. Used for three cats, 2 indoor/catio, one outdoor/indoor. Worked fine for about a year and a half, then last month the outdoor cat had fleas (in February no less, when chances, while not zero, are better as the cold is not as hospitable for fleas). Luckily was able to get Capstar from Walmart which will kill fleas pretty immediately but it only lasts about 24-ish hours - buys time to get something else longer lasting. Thankfully caught it early enough that it ended up not being too much of a mess.
Got them all on Bravecto so that would give me two months to decide what I want to switch them too, plus would prevent any worms they could've been exposed too from the fleas. The outdoor cat will need tick protection too, which is why I liked the fipronil. Thankfully the vet is cool with calling in a script if I find a better deal online for something (I've had other vets make me jump through a bunch of hoops and then charge me so much for the script that I ended up not saving much).
As others have said I think environment is a big thing, and how bad the fleas/ticks are in your area. If you're near wooded areas I think your chances are more likely to have issues with more fleas/ticks. Of course I used to do field work in a graveled area and we had problems with ticks all the time, so there ya go. If you try this and haven't before, I'd suggest checking your pets daily to see how it goes and keep some Capstar on hand in case you need it, or at least know you can get it the same day from somewhere nearby.
I know the fipronil can be great for those caring for feral cats and if that's all you can do, you're doing your best you can, nothing to feel bad about. It's a shame there's not a great affordable alternative for those caring for ferals.
