Highly doubtful. I would get the Sony just because it's newer and has more modern features, but in terms of components used they're likely on a similar level.
Curious on the components used part, is that a hunch or you know for a fact?

Just an educated guess. The Sony isn't a high-end receiver, and the biggest differences are the processing features (360 audio) and better HDMI 2.1 and audio format support. If those features don't interest you, might as well save the extra money and get the much cheaper model. I've also had better luck with Denon and Marantz than Sony in terms of reliability, but that is purely subjective.
I'm switching from the Yamaha TSR700 that's been acting up. I'm fairly satisfied with the TSR700 except I don't feel like I'm getting much out of the height speakers as I'd hoped.
I, too, just got the NR-7100 but the two aren't even in the same ballpark. One is a 9.2 with way more power.

That's true to a point but it's a pretty small niche crowd that exceeds 7.2 and needs that extra power which the guy above stated he didn't so that pretty much wipes out what caused them to not be in the "same ballpark". Beyond that, they are quite comparable actually and have gotten good reviews from what i've come across (I even seen quite a few Vs. threads when researching). The grey area imo is where most will have to make up there mind as you have different pros and cons but for me personally the Sony was the clear winner here.

I am surprised this didn't get much traction.
