I got the same error and figured out how to get around it. Don't use the links above. Login to Metro with your phone line and PIN. Then, go to Phones & devices >> Tablets & devices. I was then able to select the Samsung tablet and added a line and paid $20. Hope this helps you out.

FYI received mine yesterday. Spent a few hours and could not unlock the bootloader or flash an Older firmware with Odin.

There is no bloatware. I did not use the sim to activate so no Metro garbage. This is so much better than Fire HD8. Folks saying that it's not worth the $20 are delusional.
So true. For $20, it is worth every penny.

What happens if I buy one of these secondhand that was never activated? Can I activate it with a metro sim? If so, do the 180 days start now?
Yes, it should, but for any reason you want to spend an extra $20 and wait 180 days to unlock. In theory, most of us are going to use it as a WiFi-only device (unless you have a special case).

You won't able go below Android 13 and you can't unlock bootloader so flash any custom rom. All you can do is flash Android 14

or checkout any other you want to install

Got mine yesterday and activated today. I got the $40 moto stylus 5g deal and I won't renew (still have 9 days of service). Two questions:
1- can I just keep the tablet on MetroPCS and pay $20 every month even if I don't have a phone line with them?
2- will the tablet unlock after 180days?

I understand the phone will unlock after 180days without paying a monthly bill.
Thanks.
Just chatted with Metro. The tablet is tied to the active phone line. Once the phone line disappears, so does the tablet regardless of how much plan life I have left on it. A bit weird. She did not know if the tablet would unlock after 180d.

And some people are complaining about the galaxy tab a7 light costing $20....Woot.com is selling it for $90-105 refurbished (as of 3/10/24).

Agreed, sleeker and more reponsive than an old Fire tablet I had around.

I screwed up and had the sim in when I connected to the internet.
Anyway to get rid of the Metro PCS stuff at this point?

Are there any utilities to debloat or strip the Samsiung tablet down to the barebones to use for surfing web and playing youtube? I manually went in to delete the apps that I could. The speed is OKAY but every so often while playing Youtube, it does lag a bit temporarily. Something must be happening in the background during this slowdown. Even an old ipad does not have this type of hiccup on youtube playback.

For $20 it's not a bad deal. But currently, it's not worth getting a 2nd one.

If you want to unlock the tablet, you will need to unlock it after 180 days. If you're very good at flashing Android devices, you can find a build on Samfw (posted in this thread).

You can delete all the metro apps and disable a few, and you almost have stock firmware. I got a Samsung A54 from Metro and flashed stock firmware, but rolled back to Metro as it crashed a few times (maybe not all the bands available on metro phones support stock firmware, but I am not going to invest much time to figure out the exact cause...wasting way too much time).

The suggestions pinned in the OP actually helped. Still not blazing fast but better

I booted mine the second time with the Metro Sim in it. It installed some Metro bloat and now a Metro boot spalsh screen but also an unlock button.

If you have Metro Build, you should see the unlock option in settings (as someone mentioned above).

I received it in a white envelope. In the past, they sent it in brown (maybe stuck at bottom or side of the box).

If you're 100% sure, then just use it on a WiFi-only tablet. I am not sure calling them will resolve anything apart from asking you to visit the store, and they will charge you.
Also, check your order status to see whether the activate button is blue or gray.
Called Metro, and they told me they can't ship out a SIM card. Rep said she's very sorry, but asked that I go to a Metro store, buy a $10 SIM card, and then call them back, and they'll credit me $10 towards my next month's bill, which I have no intentions of renewing. I said I'd rather return the tablet, which surprisingly, the rep didn't really try to talk me out of. She did question why I wasn't open to visiting a physical Metro store, and I explained being a Tmo subscriber, I've gotten much better quality of service than being told to run out and grab a SIM card out of pocket before calling them back for an adjustment of credit.

In the past, I've been able to activate on Tmo using left over Tmo network MVNO SIM cards(from Mint, Ultra Mobile) I've gotten for free. I think I might still have a few that haven't expired. What are the chances I can use one of those to activate on Metro?

If I choose to just keep it as a Wi-Fi tablet, I'm guessing it'll never auto unlock after 180 days?
