That said, if you travel over 6 hours, the signature sony headphone ear cramping will come to play ( I don't know why, but they have had this poor ear chamber design since 1990), I would get bose instead if you do long haul flights
And yes, I have them all
Bottom line is that XM5 may only be a slight upgrade with regard to ANC, however this may not even be noticeable. Both are great options. I don't think you would regret purchasing the XM4's and saving ~$50.

IMO folding is overrated. I had the Bose QC45 before. You still have a bulky case even folded. Get a clip and hook to the outside of your bag.
I agree the ANC will be close enough. From what I experienced, the XM5 has better bass. Also the mic on the XM5 is significantly better if you need to get on calls.
One of the few that didn't put a lot of pressure on my ears. I've tried Bose that was released around the same time and the pressure was bad. So, it's easy to say - what works for one may not work for another.
Any input on how the xm4's interact with the Apple ecosystem?
If you're not an audiophile it probably won't be a huge step up from a $60 set of Ankers or something, but I've had the cheaper headsets die after a year, and the Sony noise cancelling is incredibly good compared to the cheaper brands. The battery lasts 20+ hours, the sound is good, the headphones are comfortable, the fold nicely for travel, and I like how they pause when removed from your head. The touch interface is just okayish, I prefer buttons.

I think the first question is why don't you use the beats

Yes, fair question, lol. I purchased them to mainly use with my Apple TV 4K, specifically with movies. And I just haven't watched many recently. But I would like to start using OTE headphones while listening to music because I'm not super in love with using my AirPods Pro's 2. So if the xm4's are better than the BSP's and interact well with Apple products then I'd probably buy
Fwiw, I use the XM5(headphones) with iPhone and iPad. I think the AirPods are a bit more seamless as iOS has the pop up when switching sources. But I also dislike how Apple auto swaps sources. With the Sony, you can use their Headphone app to switch sources or have it fixed to one. It works fine. I would not let this stop you from using Sony.

My xm3 headband is starting to crumble
