I've owned this for over a year and it is a good mini PC but it does throttle heavily under GPU load. Every couple days it will high-speed fan for almost a minute turning on before you get a video display. Most times powering it on. It's a brief high-speed fan for a few seconds and video post. There have been no updates and this model being the lite version cannot use the UM 773 non-lite version bios.
This is being discounted because there is a new version out available directly from minisforum with the 780M GPU.

I'm sure a Ryzen 8600 / 8700 cpu/gpu model is in the works as well

Be warned, I had this system and with very high quality ram clocked low at 4800 (it can't go to 5600), it will thermal throttle the GPU after 10-13 minutes. It will cook the ram to about 85 degrees to when the ram starts to throttle. The bottom compartment is a hot box and the only solution is a 3d printed or at cost bottom plate with additional fans.
For 16$ i think the AC Infinity MULTIFAN S4 140mm fan would work well under it.

Different deal, but if you're paying up for more, I'd just go with that UM780 including 32gb and 512gb harddrive. shows a $146 coupon for me, which would bring it down to $594. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CNVC4N1B

But now you're looking at a $594 system when the one from OP was $311. so feels like we're comparing different types of deals here.
Actually there is a bunch of fully built AMD R7 7840HS/780M systems with ram and sdd at around 450 to 500 USD. ignore the brands (since MINISFORUM has been around for a while and therefore premium in pricing and maybe support), those represent much better value. by the time you add DDR5 ram (which most probably donsn't have), and SSD, you are at around 450 USD anyway, might as well just get one with better processor and much better GPU (about 20% faster)

https://www.amazon.com/FIREBAT-77...4bcb5&th=1

or

https://www.amazon.com/Trycoo-HA-...4bcb5&th=1

but i think they can go lower than even that, if the intel NUC laptop with ARC 550M can be had for 600... they could be able to have that in a box for the same money minus the screen, case, keyboard, battery and whatnot.

I'd recommend having a look at Tuxedo OS. Or Pop!_OS, if you don't like KDE. Depending on your goals, ChimeraOS could be pretty interesting too.

Having this as a little gaming node on a random TV is nice. Thinking Chimera

Ah that's a shame, I was thinking about pairing this up with an egpu, but if just running the system will run it into throtting other components, not worth.

You just set the PC on top. Generally no need for any mods.

The bottom, which is completely encased has no airflow in any regard. The grill is needed to all the air to flow

Oh yes you are right. I was thinking of the UM790 which has a grill and fan on the bottom so it's perfect to just set on one of those fans.

Yeah that fan design was feedback on the Venus case from the UM773 era

I'm wondering if this much better than my GigaByte BRi5H-8250 that i put low end 32GB ram and 256GB ssd into it.
I use it for Win10 software development with visual studio and visual studio code. The thing runs hot and the fan noise is a killer.

I would love a $330 replacement where I could bring over the old ram and ssd for cooler running & quieter system. Any opinions ?

The Minisforum UM773 Lite mini PC uses DDR5 RAM and your system uses DDR4, so that will not work. Your Gigabyte mini PC has 55mm fan so the noise will be loud. If you are happy with the performance and just need something cooler with less noise, you could try something like this mini PC [amazon.com] ($189 AC) and bring over your old RAM/SSD.
