All drives are a gamble, 2 is 1, but at refurb prices you can get 2 for the price of one new one.

I'm brand agnostic, but Seagate as a brand has far greater rate of failure vs WD.

Can get it on eBay from goHardDrive for 69.99 with the 5 year warranty.
There is a code for 15% off eBay price in an online site that will bring cost to $59.49. Name not allowed to mention here.

Search eBay for:
HGST Ultrastar HE10 HUH721010ALE600 10TB SATA 6Gb/s 7200RPM 3.5" Enterprise HDD

There's also the 12TB for 99.99 from goHardDrive with the 5 year warranty.
Search eBay for:
HGST Ultrastar DC HC520 12TB SATA 6Gb 256MB 3.5" Enterprise HDD- HUH721212ALE601

These hard drives are rated for 2.5 million hours or about 285 years!

These hard drives should work great with the Synology NAS 4-bay DiskStation DS423+ or the 2-bay DS224+

These are essentially HGST, Inc. (Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) hard disk drives and they have a great reputation as very long-lasting hard drives.
That code doesn't seem to work for either of these drives.

Must go through that site's link for the coupon to work.

I ordered 2 10Tb drives at $60 each.
That vendor also has the HGST 12Tb drives at $99.99 each but $85 each with the coupon.

Keep in mind that SD is a business here to make money and users saving money is not the priority here. It's SD making money that's the primary purpose.
It's far more important for SD that it makes that penny when you click through its links here than you saving $10 if you have access to another site's coupon link posted by another user, even though that coupon is not available here at SD!

SD can be more flexible in that case, but it's not and it deletes those posts and penalizes anyone posting it.
It's the user's responsibility here to search online for the best prices and coupons.

Make sure you use the included cable... mine seemed DOA until I used the sata power cable included. Has something to do with a feature you need to bypass as it doesn't work with all motherboards.
What's the power disable cable and can these drives be used in the Synology NASs and other NASs???
Such cable will not be compatible with NASs.

Also, has anyone here installed these drives in a newer or older Synology NAS, or any other NAS with or without problems caused by this power disable issue?

GoHardDrive let me RMA the 3x 12TB Seagate drives, cancel my 4x 10TB HGST drive order, and get in on the $70 10TB HGST drive. I have 4 drives in my NAS so replacing them with 4 would be a lot easier than starting from scratch. Might just take longer. 5/5 for their customer service!
Hitachi hard drives HGST, are far better than Seagate or WD or Toshiba.
I have 1 and 2Tb HGST hard drives working 24/7 in Synology NASs for about 15 years now with zero issues in different locations.

The only thing that concerns me now is this power cable compatibility of these HGST drives, especially with any older NASs.

These are questions that have been answered many times before. There's no power disable (PWDIS) "cable".
If you have a drive that supports PWDIS and a PSU that doesn't, you snip or tape the proper pin on the drive, use a USB dock, or use a crimped Molex connector for power. Or get a PSU that supports PWDIS.

Usually a NAS is fine, but we cannot know how old the particular one you have a question about is. Still, not an issue if you tape or snip the pin on the drive. Google PWDIS or 3.3v mod.

And FWIW, WD owns HGST, there is no HGST anymore. They may use the HGST designs, but the drives are wholly WD at this point.

Looking at this PWDIS feature that may cause some of these drives not to spin up:

According to WD Technology brief it depends on the hard drive model # and part #, as some have it and some don't:

https://documents.westerndigital.com/content/dam/doc-library/en_us/assets/public/western-digital/col... [westerndigital.com]

It looks as if those drives with the model # HUH721010ALE600 and part # beginning with the # 0F274xx for the 10 Tb, and HUH721212ALE601 and 0F29xxx for the 12Tb have the PWDIS feature that will have to be taken care of or the drive will not spin up.

It looks like the 10Tb HGST drives sold by goHardDrive on eBay have it, and some on Newegg do not have it according to the WD Technology brief.
For instance, a drive shown on Newegg with the model # HUH721010ALE601 and part # 0F27605 does not have it according to the WD Technology brief.

So, it looks like one may get a drive with it or without, depending on the batches these reseller vendors have and ship at the time.
The only thing certain is the drive size, 10Tb or 12Tb depending on one's purchase.

According to the WD Technology brief linked above, these Enterprise Hard Drives can be ISE, SE, SED.

SED: Self-Encrypting Drive
ISE: Instant Secure Erase
SE: Secure Erase

It's best to be familiar with these terms to ensure that one always has access to the data and can recover them, and these data are backed up elsewhere.
These are not the run-of-the-mill hard drives, they are Enterprise Hard Drives and are far more sophisticated.

Since all these drives are bulk sales one is not sure which one of these types one may get.
That's why it's important to be familiar with these drives especially if one uses them for data one cannot afford to lose and/or get scrambled with no recovery possibilities.

Most likely these Enterprise Drives were used by companies like AWS, Google, Facebook, and other large companies that have the knowledgeable IT staff to take care of various issues/problems that may arise.

Yes, that is correct. It's essentially luck of the draw, so it's good to be prepared for a PWDIS drive just in case you get one.

Or you could get a WD HC530 series drive, which don't support PWDIS.

Not a lot of info to go on there, but this is a pretty good enclosure if you need to swap a drive easily, want a reputable enclosure, and can possibly benefit from active cooling. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Ex...013WODZH0/

If you don't need to swap drives regularly, want a built-in cloning feature, or have any number of other requirements (USB-C connection maybe?), there are many viable alternatives that may be better suited.

If these were purchased from the eBay vendor goHardDrive, there are free returns: 30 days returns. Seller pays for return shipping.

Two questions:
1. What's the Synology model and how old is it,
2. Did you try to neutralize Pin 3 as described in posts 114 and 116 here, and then try to see if it works, although that doesn't seem to be necessary with Synology NASs?

There's some discussion on Reddit about this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology..._synology/

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...ts_drives/

https://www.reddit.com/r/synology...ire_taped/

Also, check the Synology Compatibility Lists for the various NAS versions/models and hard drive Firmware (Other NAS companies probably have similar compatibility lists):

https://www.synology.com/en-us/co...o_ssd_trim

For instance for the 10Tb WD HGST drives (Only partial lists below. For complete drive lists check the link above. Bold indicates hard drive Firmware version):

Notes
This drive is compatible to RS3617xs+, RS3617RPxs, RS4017xs+ and DS3617xs only with 384 firmware. Please contact HGST customer service to get the firmware update.
Please note that the HDD/SSD firmware may be updated or modified by its manufacturer without prior notice. Synology can only ensure that the firmware listed is compatible with Synology products.
This drive is only compatible with Synology server models equipped with hard drive trays and shipped after June, 2014.

Also, for just a sample of specific Synology NASs:

https://www.synology.com/en-globa...o_ssd_trim

Or:

https://www.synology.com/en-globa...o_ssd_trim

Or:

https://www.synology.com/en-globa...o_ssd_trim

Or:

https://www.synology.com/en-globa...o_ssd_trim

As it can be seen from the above, not all Synology NASs are compatible with the HGST 10Tb hard drives. Or the 12Tb ones.
