The Ortur Laser Master 2 S2 with the 1.6W LU2-2 laser module is currently on sale for $179.99 with the discount code
2W-S2-10 shown on the product page.
With a power output of 1.6W, this laser engraver is mainly suited for engraving rather than cutting (except paper and cardboard). It has an advantage over more powerful models in that it has a smaller laser focus, which allows finer engraving and slightly better resolution.
The Ortur Laser Master 2 is an older model, but probably one of the most common laser engravers used by hobbyists. There are a lot of tutorials, support and modifications provided by other users for it.
As a diode laser, it is suitable for engraving materials such as wood, leather, paper, cardboard, non-transparent plastics and fabrics.

Also, Ortur (I have been an owner of several Ortur machines since 2020) has undergone some shakeups in the past year. They are coming back to speed on support, but for a while there went dark on customers. If you have any issues with equipment (which is quite common with these beginner setups), be warned that it might be harder to get supplier support. Facebook community groups do exist and are active though.
If looking to cut, you can look at their 10w (output) laser for starters. The 5w output will do some 3mm plywood, but very slowly.
Best of luck!
